What is a DevOps architect?

DevOps Architects are IT professionals responsible for designing and implementing the overall DevOps strategy within an organization. They bridge the gap between development and operations teams by defining processes, tools, and automation that enhance software delivery and infrastructure management. Their work ensures faster, more reliable deployments, improved collaboration, and greater scalability. DevOps Architects also evaluate new technologies, enforce best practices, and ensure that security and compliance are integrated into the development lifecycle.

What is the difference between Devops Architect vs Devops Engineer?

AspectDevops ArchitectDevops Engineer
CredentialsTypically requires certifications like AWS Certified Solutions Architect, Docker, KubernetesOften holds certifications in cloud platforms, CI/CD tools, and scripting
Work EnvironmentDesigns infrastructure, oversees architecture, collaborates with multiple teamsImplements CI/CD pipelines, manages deployment, maintains automation tools
Industry UsageUsed in organizations planning large-scale infrastructure and architecture designCommonly found in teams executing daily deployment and automation tasks

The Devops Architect focuses on designing and planning the overall infrastructure and architecture, while the Devops Engineer handles the implementation, automation, and daily operations. Both roles require similar certifications and work closely within the same environment, but their responsibilities differ in scope and focus.

How does a DevOps architect typically collaborate with development and operations teams to streamline deployment processes?

A DevOps Architect plays a pivotal role in bridging the gap between development and operations teams by designing and implementing automated CI/CD pipelines, defining best practices, and standardizing toolsets. They regularly facilitate cross-team meetings to understand workflow pain points and ensure alignment on deployment strategies. By establishing effective communication channels, they help teams quickly resolve integration issues, promote a culture of shared responsibility, and foster continuous improvement. This collaborative approach not only accelerates software delivery but also enhances system reliability and scalability.

What does a DevOps architect do?

As a DevOps architect, you work in infrastructure planning and software development. Your job is to configure, implement, and test computer systems. You may use DevOps practices to develop applications within your company’s infrastructure, implement those applications in a streamlined process, or ensure their usefulness. As a DevOps architect, you may also help teams streamline their development process. This job involves balancing software development and IT operations in a way that fulfills the needs of your employer as efficiently as possible.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a DevOps Architect, and why are they important?

Job Description:

About the Role

We are seeking a Senior Mainframe DevOps Architect to lead solution design and own end-to-end architecture for enterprise customers-translating complex business requirements into robust technical roadmaps that amplify the value of their mainframe investments.

This role sits alongside Senior Consultants in our delivery track. Rather than primarily executing individual workstreams, the Senior Architect establishes the overall technical direction, sets architectural standards for the delivery team, and serves as the primary technical escalation point for both the customer and internal stakeholders. As a premier technical strategist, you will combine a depth of broad, real-world experience with IT industry-specific certifications to drive enterprise-wide DevOps and/or platform engineering transformations.

Leveraging specialized knowledge in Endevor (and/or other competitive solutions), Zowe, and/or REXX scripting, you will design frameworks that bridge traditional mainframe environments with modern enterprise practices. If you thrive on driving architectural innovation, defining repeatable design patterns, and guiding Global 2000 mainframe organizations through critical technical evolutions, this position offers the scope and autonomy to shape the future of mainframe DevOps.

Note: Ability to travel to client sites is required for this position.

CUSTOMER FOCUS & STRATEGIC ALIGNMENT

  • End-to-End Solution Architecture: Own the comprehensive solution architecture for enterprise customer engagements involving Broadcom mainframe software products and modern DevOps frameworks.

  • Architecture & Design Workshops: Lead interactive design workshops with customer technical, business, and executive stakeholders to map out multi-phase implementation roadmaps.

  • Relationship & Portfolio Alignment: Build deep, trusted relationships across the customer's IT leadership silos to evaluate complex environments (z/OS, security frameworks, and subsystems), proactively identifying architectural risks and integration dependencies.

  • Pre-Sales & Engagement Scoping: Partner closely with Broadcom Account Teams during early-stage discovery to technically qualify opportunities; and work with Services Sales leads to estimate level of effort (LOE), and provide technical input for crafting of proposals and Statements of Work (SOWs) in collaboration with the contracts focal.

  • Value Positioning & Differentiators: Effectively present high-level solution blueprints and key competitive differentiators to executive audiences, ensuring proposed architectures align tightly with client business objectives.

ARCHITECTURAL STRATEGY, DESIGN, & EXECUTION

  • Blueprint Design & Specification: Produce detailed, robust technical specifications, integration approaches, and architecture blueprints suitable for both execution teams and executive stakeholders.

  • Technical Leadership & Delivery Direction: Provide overarching technical direction to consultants and senior consultants executing against the architecture, ensuring consistency, quality, and structural integrity across all workstreams.

  • Standardization & Pattern Reusability: Identify opportunities to build reusable architecture patterns, frameworks, and deployment templates to continuously mature Broadcom's consulting methodologies.

  • Primary Technical Escalation: Serve as the final technical tier for complex, cross-system environment challenges encountered during implementation, driving critical issue resolution and root-cause analysis.

  • Modernization & Migration Strategy: Architect migration paths from legacy or competitive products to modern Endevor implementation approaches, establishing the overarching strategy for upgrades and software design shifts.

TECHNICAL SKILL & DOMAIN EXPERTISE

  • Architectural Ecosystem Expertise: Expert-level knowledge of Endevor (and/or competitor) concepts, practices, and core components (including ACM, PDM, Security Interface, and Quick Edit) with the ability to design highly tailored inventory structures, lifecycle flows, and integration strategies across modern CI/CD tools (e.g., Jenkins, Git/Enterprise Git) and scripting languages (Python, Groovy, Gulp).

  • Tooling, Languages & Subsystems: Proficient with REXX scripting and JCL, alongside modern mainframe DevOps tools - including Zowe (Zowe CLI, API/ML, Code4z extensions like Explorer for Endevor and Zowe Explorer) and testing suites (InterTest, File Master Plus, SymDump) - with a strong understanding of how these practices integrate with core subsystems (e.g., CICS, DB2, security software) and hybrid cloud architectures.

  • Market & Competitive Intelligence: Maintain a thorough understanding of the competitive marketplace to architect clear technical advantages over legacy alternatives.

LEADERSHIP, MENTORSHIP & COMMUNICATION

  • Consulting Team Mentorship: Actively mentor consultants and senior consultants on architecture principles, complex design trade-offs, and professional services best practices.

  • Requirement Translation: Translate ambiguous, high-level business goals into concrete, structured technical requirements and execution objectives.

  • Stakeholder Alignment: Serve as the technical lead on engagements, partnering closely with the Broadcom Project Manager and client stakeholders to align on technical expectations, communicate architectural progress, and highlight technical dependencies.

REQUIREMENTS

  • Bachelor's degree in a technical discipline (Computer Science, Information Systems, or Engineering) combined with 8+ years of experience working with IBM mainframe environments (z/OS), with clear demonstrated experience leading the solution architecture and technical direction of multi-workstream enterprise DevOps engagements.
