Development Lab Manager information

What does a development lab manager do?

A Development Lab Manager oversees the daily operations of research and development laboratories, ensuring that experiments and projects are conducted efficiently and safely. They manage lab personnel, maintain equipment, oversee budgets, and ensure compliance with safety regulations. Additionally, they often coordinate with other departments, manage inventory, and support the implementation of new technologies or procedures. Their role is crucial in maintaining a productive and innovative laboratory environment.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a development lab manager?

A Development Lab Manager typically requires a strong background in engineering or science, experience in laboratory operations, and often a relevant bachelor's or master's degree. Familiarity with lab management software, safety compliance systems, and technical equipment such as testing instruments is essential. Leadership, problem-solving, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for managing teams and coordinating projects. These competencies ensure efficient lab operations, safety compliance, and successful project outcomes in a fast-paced R&D environment.

What are some common challenges a development lab manager might face in ensuring smooth lab operations?

A Development Lab Manager often encounters challenges such as balancing multiple project timelines, maintaining equipment calibration and safety standards, and adapting to shifting priorities from research and development teams. Effective communication and coordination among scientists, engineers, and technical staff are crucial, as the lab manager must ensure that resources are allocated efficiently without disrupting ongoing experiments. Staying up-to-date with regulatory compliance and implementing best practices for lab safety and data management are also essential components of the role.

Job description

Who We Are

TPM Laboratories, Inc. is an independent contract testing laboratory providing personalized analytical services to the pharmaceutical and chemical industries. TPM Labs specializes in Analytical Research and Development Testing Services, Quality Control Testing and Stability Storage & Testing Services.

Our goal is to provide high quality, cost effective and timely service, personalized to meet your needs.

Role Overview

TPM Laboratories is seeking a Chemistry Laboratory Manager to run day-to-day analytical lab execution and provide hands-on technical leadership. This role exists to keep client testing on track, maintain cGMP compliance, and ensure results are accurate, defensible, and delivered on time.

Key responsibilities:

  • Lead, coach, and manage laboratory scientists/technicians; set expectations and address performance issues.
  • Build and adjust schedules, priorities, and staffing across multiple client projects.
  • Ensure compliant testing, documentation, and data integrity (ALCOA+).
  • Provide technical oversight for HPLC, GC, LC-MS, UV, IR, dissolution, and wet chemistry; guide method development/validation.
  • Maintain inspection and audit readiness; drive investigations (OOS/OOT, deviations), CAPA, and change control.

Required qualifications:

  • BS in Chemistry or related field (advanced degree preferred)
  • 8+ years in cGMP pharma/analytical labs; 3+ years leading teams
  • Strong client communication and sound technical judgment
How Your Day Runs

You start by confirming the day’s plan: what’s due, what’s at risk, and which instruments and people are ready to support commitments. Early check-ins keep priorities clear and remove bottlenecks before they grow. As the day moves, you switch between quick client updates, reviewing data and documentation, and making practical calls when timelines and quality pressure collide. You spend time in the lab to stay close to how work is being executed, then shift to forward planning - coverage for upcoming work, readiness for visits, and closing out open quality events. You wrap up by aligning on tomorrow’s schedule and escalating issues early so nothing surprises the team or the client.

Our team needs you!
