DEVELOPMENT COORDINATOR

First Book | Washington, DC (Hybrid: Tuesdays & Wednesdays Onsite)

Through innovative public–private partnerships and a national network of more than 600,000 educators, program leaders, and community organizations, First Book has distributed over 225 million books and educational resources to under-resourced communities. Our work spans e-commerce (First Book Marketplace), research and insights (First Book R&I), and tailored program development (First Book Accelerator), all designed to elevate the voices and needs of educators serving children in low-income communities.

ABOUT THE ROLE
The Development Coordinator is an essential part of the First Book team, providing critical support for the Vice President of Development, Director of Development, and the entire Development department which raises funds from and with individuals, foundations, and community volunteers in support of the organization’s goals and mission.

The position demands the highest attention to detail, the ability to work autonomously in a fast-paced multi-function environment, a desire to work efficiently and improve systems and processes, and a passion for internal and external customer service.

WHAT YOU’LL OWN:
  • Provide direct support to the Director of Development for donor relations, donor touchpoint communications and campaigns, and grant applications and reports.
  • Enter gifts within two days of receipt and at a high-level of accuracy.
  • Produce acknowledgements within three days of gift entry and manage donor correspondence in support of donor relations and stewardship activities.
  • Support the Donor Engagement Coordinator with creative, copy, and content trafficking to ensure delivery deadlines are met.
  • Proactively contribute to problem-solving, team brainstorms, and strategic and operational planning exercises.
  • Support the Donor Engagement Coordinator to create, maintain, and place campaigns in the correct hierarchy in Salesforce, GoFundMe Pro, and Fundraise Up.
  • Manage the prioritization process of Development tickets with the Member Service department.
  • Research and create detailed profiles for major donor and foundation grant prospects.
  • Manage the development of standard protocols and systems management.
  • Various administrative duties and other tasks as assigned.

Education:
  • Associate’s degree or an equivalent combination of education and relevant professional experience required.
  • Bachelor’s degree preferred.

Skills & Experience:
  • Two or more years of relevant professional experience in fundraising, development, nonprofit operations, customer service, or a related area.
  • High degree of proficiency with Microsoft Office, including Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
  • Strong attention to detail, problem-solving skills, and ability to work effectively with systems, processes, and data.
  • Excellent organizational and time-management skills, with the ability to prioritize and manage multiple responsibilities.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including a professional, patient, and service-oriented presence when communicating by phone.
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment and adapt to changing priorities.
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate across teams and contribute to the development and continuous improvement of processes and programs.
  • Self-directed and resourceful, with intellectual curiosity and an entrepreneurial approach to work.
  • Demonstrated commitment to First Book’s mission and vision.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree.
  • Two or more years of fundraising, development, or nonprofit experience.
  • Experience with Raiser’s Edge, Salesforce, or comparable donor relationship management (CRM) systems.
  • Experience with Fundraise Up, GoFundMe Pro, or comparable peer-to-peer or digital fundraising platforms.
  • Experience with Salesforce Marketing Cloud or comparable email marketing and list management systems.
  • Experience with Monday.com, Confluence, Jira, or comparable project, knowledge, or case management platforms.
  • Previous customer service or constituent-support experience.

COMPENSATION & BENEFITS:
Salary Range: $47,000 annually (non-negotiable).
