What is a developer relations manager?

Developer Relations Managers, often called DevRel Managers, are professionals who build and nurture relationships between a company and its developer community. They act as a bridge by advocating for developers' needs within the company and helping external developers understand and effectively use the company's products. Their responsibilities often include organizing events, creating technical content, providing feedback to product teams, and fostering a vibrant developer ecosystem. Ultimately, their goal is to enhance developer satisfaction and engagement, which can drive product adoption and innovation.

How does a developer relations manager typically collaborate with product and engineering teams?

As a Developer Relations Manager, you'll frequently act as a bridge between external developer communities and internal product or engineering teams. You'll relay developer feedback, advocate for user needs, and help prioritize feature requests based on community trends. Collaboration often involves participating in sprint meetings, drafting technical documentation, and co-hosting workshops or webinars with engineers to ensure alignment. This cross-functional teamwork is essential for building trust with both the developer community and internal stakeholders.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a developer relations manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Developer Relations Manager, you need a solid background in software development, expertise in API or platform technologies, and often a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with technical tools such as GitHub, documentation platforms, and community management systems is common, along with experience in public speaking or content creation. Exceptional communication, relationship-building, and problem-solving skills help you engage developer communities and advocate for their needs internally. These capabilities are crucial for building trust, fostering community growth, and ensuring developer success with your products.

Job description

Job Summary:
Klaviyo is a company that empowers creators to own their destiny by making first-party data accessible and actionable. They are seeking a Senior Software Engineer to join their Developer Infrastructure Team, where the primary focus is on empowering engineers to ship code efficiently and safely by managing the build systems and platform infrastructure.
Responsibilities:
• Analyze, optimize, and secure backend and third-party dependencies across the codebase.
• Build frameworks for evaluating risk and ensuring our dependency graph stays healthy, performant, and maintainable.
• Lead the planning and execution of major software releases and updates — from design through production rollout — including hands-on individual contribution throughout.
• Drive improvements across key cycle time metrics including PR CI speed, code review turnaround, and commit velocity.
• Relentlessly reduce toil and increase engineering efficiency across the organization.
• Contribute to the standards for code quality, dependency hygiene, and platform reliability that all teams follow.
• Spearhead efforts to leverage AI within the platform lifecycle and use AI tooling to accelerate your own development work.
• Partner with engineers, security teams, and stakeholders to gather requirements, resolve conflicts, and roll out platform changes that teams can adopt with confidence.
• Proactively monitor the health and reliability of the platform, diagnosing and resolving complex issues before they become critical incidents.
Qualifications:
Required:
• 5+ years of software engineering experience with strong computer science fundamentals and a focus on clean, maintainable, well-architected code.
• Ability to analyze, optimize, and secure backend and third-party dependencies across the codebase.
• Experience in leading the planning and execution of major software releases and updates.
• Ability to drive improvements across key cycle time metrics including PR CI speed, code review turnaround, and commit velocity.
• Experience in contributing to the standards for code quality, dependency hygiene, and platform reliability.
• Experience in leveraging AI within the platform lifecycle and using AI tooling to accelerate development work.
• Ability to partner with engineers, security teams, and stakeholders to gather requirements and resolve conflicts.
• Proactive monitoring of the health and reliability of the platform, diagnosing and resolving complex issues.
• Comfortable reasoning about distributed systems, dependency graphs, and the downstream impact of platform-level decisions.
• Ability to move across the stack when needed — whether debugging a Python integration, optimizing a Go service, or wiring up infrastructure automation.
• Experience experimenting with AI in work or personal projects and eagerness to find ways to use it to make work smarter and more efficient.
• Taking pride in the end-to-end health of the platform and proactively advocating for engineering excellence.
Company:
Klaviyo is an automation and email platform designed to help grow businesses. Founded in 2012, the company is headquartered in Boston, USA, with a team of 1001-5000 employees. The company is currently Late Stage.
