What is a developer relations manager?

Developer Relations Managers, often called DevRel Managers, are professionals who build and nurture relationships between a company and its developer community. They act as a bridge by advocating for developers' needs within the company and helping external developers understand and effectively use the company's products. Their responsibilities often include organizing events, creating technical content, providing feedback to product teams, and fostering a vibrant developer ecosystem. Ultimately, their goal is to enhance developer satisfaction and engagement, which can drive product adoption and innovation.

How does a developer relations manager typically collaborate with product and engineering teams?

As a Developer Relations Manager, you'll frequently act as a bridge between external developer communities and internal product or engineering teams. You'll relay developer feedback, advocate for user needs, and help prioritize feature requests based on community trends. Collaboration often involves participating in sprint meetings, drafting technical documentation, and co-hosting workshops or webinars with engineers to ensure alignment. This cross-functional teamwork is essential for building trust with both the developer community and internal stakeholders.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a developer relations manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Developer Relations Manager, you need a solid background in software development, expertise in API or platform technologies, and often a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with technical tools such as GitHub, documentation platforms, and community management systems is common, along with experience in public speaking or content creation. Exceptional communication, relationship-building, and problem-solving skills help you engage developer communities and advocate for their needs internally. These capabilities are crucial for building trust, fostering community growth, and ensuring developer success with your products.

Job description

We are a foundational Layer 1 blockchain project engineered to solve the global scalability trilemma. As we move from technical breakthrough to mainstream adoption, we need a Public Relations Manager to own our narrative. You will be the primary bridge between our core engineering milestones and the global media, ensuring that our vision for a scalable, decentralized future is communicated with clarity and impact.

Your Core Responsibilities
  • Build and maintain deep relationships with key journalists, editors, and influencers across both the Web3/crypto trade press and mainstream financial/tech outlets.

  • Develop and execute comprehensive PR campaigns for major network milestones, partnership announcements, and ecosystem growth initiatives.

  • Write high-stakes press releases, executive op-eds, and thought-leadership pieces that position our founders as leading voices in the blockchain scalability space.

  • Act as the first line of defense in managing the project's reputation, drafting rapid-response messaging for technical upgrades or market-wide events.

  • Secure high-profile speaking engagements and media opportunities at major global industry events (e.g., Token2049, EthCC, Consensus).

Who You Are
  • You have a "black book" of established media contacts and know exactly who to call to place a story that moves the needle.

  • You can distill complex Layer 1 technical specifications into compelling stories that resonate with both retail investors and institutional builders.

  • You thrive in the 24/7 crypto news cycle and can pivot quickly to capitalize on breaking industry trends.

  • Your prose is sharp, professional, and requires minimal editing, whether you're drafting a formal announcement or a quick media pitch.

Requirements
  • 5+ years of professional experience in Public Relations (PR) or Communications.

  • A proven, established network of media contacts within the tech and cryptocurrency sectors.

  • Extensive experience drafting press releases and managing media inquiries for high-growth tech or blockchain projects.

  • Deep understanding of the Layer 1 landscape, scalability solutions, and broader Web3 market dynamics.

  • Ability to work effectively with remote, global teams across various time zones.
