What is a developer relations manager?

Developer Relations Managers, often called DevRel Managers, are professionals who build and nurture relationships between a company and its developer community. They act as a bridge by advocating for developers' needs within the company and helping external developers understand and effectively use the company's products. Their responsibilities often include organizing events, creating technical content, providing feedback to product teams, and fostering a vibrant developer ecosystem. Ultimately, their goal is to enhance developer satisfaction and engagement, which can drive product adoption and innovation.

How does a developer relations manager typically collaborate with product and engineering teams?

As a Developer Relations Manager, you'll frequently act as a bridge between external developer communities and internal product or engineering teams. You'll relay developer feedback, advocate for user needs, and help prioritize feature requests based on community trends. Collaboration often involves participating in sprint meetings, drafting technical documentation, and co-hosting workshops or webinars with engineers to ensure alignment. This cross-functional teamwork is essential for building trust with both the developer community and internal stakeholders.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a developer relations manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Developer Relations Manager, you need a solid background in software development, expertise in API or platform technologies, and often a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with technical tools such as GitHub, documentation platforms, and community management systems is common, along with experience in public speaking or content creation. Exceptional communication, relationship-building, and problem-solving skills help you engage developer communities and advocate for their needs internally. These capabilities are crucial for building trust, fostering community growth, and ensuring developer success with your products.

What is the difference between Developer Relations Manager vs Developer Advocate?

Job description

Principal Manager, Communications & Developer Influence

We're Redis. We built the product that runs the fast apps our world runs on. (If you checked the weather, used your credit card, or looked at your flight status online today, you’re welcome.) At Redis, you’ll work with the fastest, simplest technology in the business- whether you’re building it, telling its story, or selling it to our 10,000+ worldwide customers. We’re creating a faster world with simpler experiences. You in?

Why would you love this job?

As Redis expands its leadership as a real-time agentic platform, we're looking for a communications leader who can help shape how the company is understood by customers, media, and the broader technology industry. As part of the Brand team, you'll develop communications strategies for PR, influencer and developer marketing, and social media that strengthen our reputation, elevate our executives, and position Redis at the center of the conversations that matter most.

You'll partner closely with executives, product marketing, and customer marketing to tell compelling stories through media relations, thought leadership, executive visibility, influencer programs, and social media. You'll work in close partnership with Developer Marketing, owning the media, creator, and social amplification layer that puts their work in front of the right audiences. And you'll help define our corporate narrative while ensuring every communication reinforces the Redis brand.

We're looking for someone with excellent communications instincts, a confident POV on agentic work flows, and a proven ability to advise senior leaders, manage agency partners, and execute high-impact communications programs in a fast-moving technology company. This is a senior individual contributor role with broad ownership across corporate communications. You'll extend your impact through agency partners, AI, and cross-functional collaboration.

What you’ll do:
  • Develop and execute Redis' corporate communications strategy to increase awareness, strengthen brand reputation, and support product launches and company growth
  • Drive proactive media relations by building strong relationships with technology, business, AI, cloud, and developer press while managing inbound opportunities
  • Partner with executives to develop thought leadership pieces, speaking opportunities, and executive visibility programs
  • Lead communications strategy around major corporate milestones, partnerships, customer stories, company research, and industry trends
  • Serve as the communications partner to Developer Marketing, aligning on cadence and channel ownership, so technical storytelling and press/creator amplification reinforce each other rather than compete for the same moments
  • Build and manage integrated communications campaigns across earned media, executive social media, influencers, and owned channels
  • Build and own an influencer program that identifies and develops relationships with independent engineers, OSS maintainers, technical YouTubers/newsletter writers, and voices who carry credibility with developer and infrastructure audiences
  • Own and manage Redis' influencer marketing strategy, bringing a strong point of view on the creators, channels, and communities that shape enterprise technology conversations
  • Own the social media function to amplify company news and executive perspectives across LinkedIn, X, and emerging platforms—and own the decision on whether we use a vendor to support this.
  • Manage PR agency relationships, establish measurable goals, and evaluate program performance through media quality, share of voice, executive visibility, and business impact
  • Collaborate across marketing, developer relations, customer marketing, and executive leadership to ensure consistent messaging and a unified external narrative
  • Monitor industry trends, competitive narratives, and emerging issues to proactively position Redis within key market conversations
  • Serve as a trusted communications advisor to executives, preparing messaging for media interviews, conferences, customer events, and strategic communications
What will you need to have?
  • 8+ years of experience in corporate communications, public relations, or integrated communications within B2B technology
  • Experience developing communications strategies for high-growth SaaS, cloud infrastructure, AI, developer tools, or enterprise software companies
  • Proven success securing meaningful earned media coverage and building long-term relationships with top-tier business and technology journalists
  • Experience creating executive thought leadership programs, including media interviews, speaking opportunities, and executive social media strategy
  • A strong point of view about implementing agentic solutions to work more effectively and efficiently
  • Strong understanding of today's media landscape, including traditional media, newsletters, podcasts, influencers, and and technical/practitioner creator communities
  • Outstanding writing, editing, and storytelling skills with the ability to translate complex technical concepts into compelling narratives
  • Demonstrated ability to influence senior executives and navigate cross-functional organizations with confidence and credibility
  • Experience managing PR agencies and integrated communications programs with measurable business outcomes
  • Experience partnering with a developer advocacy or DevRel function, with a clear sense of where communications ends and technical community-building begins
  • Strong project management skills with the ability to prioritize multiple initiatives in a fast-paced, high-growth environment
We give back to our employees:

Our culture is what makes Redis a fun and rewarding place to work. To support you at work and beyond, we offer all our US team members fantastic benefits and perks:

  • Competitive salaries and equity grants
  • Unlimited time off to promote a healthy work-life balance
  • H/D/V coverage along with 401K, FSA, and commuter benefits
  • Frequent team celebrations and recreation events
  • Home internet & phone stipend
  • Learning and development opportunities
  • Ability to influence a high-performance company on its way to IPO

The estimated gross base annual salary range for this role is $150,000 - $185,000 per year in New York, California, Washington, Colorado, and Rhode Island. Actual compensation may vary and is dependent on various factors, including a candidate’s work location, qualifications, experience, and competencies. Base annual salary is one component of Redis’ total compensation and competitive benefits package, which may include 401(k), unlimited time off, learning and development opportunities, and comprehensive health and wellness benefits. This role may include discretionary bonuses, stock options, commuter benefits based on location, or a commission plan. Salary history is not used in compensation package decisions. Redis utilizes market pay data to determine compensation, so posted compensation ranges are subject to change as new market data becomes available.
