What is a Developer Project Manager?

A Developer Project Manager is a professional who oversees software development projects from inception to completion. They bridge the gap between technical development teams and business stakeholders, ensuring that projects are delivered on time, within budget, and to the required quality standards. Their responsibilities include planning project timelines, coordinating team members, managing risks, and tracking progress. Developer Project Managers often have a background in software development, which helps them understand technical challenges and communicate effectively with developers.

What does a Developer Project Manager do?

A Developer Project Manager often wears two hats—leading the project while contributing technically. Balancing these responsibilities requires strong time management and prioritization skills. Generally, the project manager will allocate specific hours for coding or technical reviews and dedicate separate blocks for meetings, planning, and stakeholder communication. Clear delegation of tasks to team members and the use of project management tools also help maintain this balance, ensuring neither aspect is neglected. This hybrid role offers valuable insight into both project oversight and technical execution, making it ideal for professionals who enjoy both leadership and hands-on work.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Developer Project Manager?

To thrive as a Developer Project Manager, you need strong project management skills, a deep understanding of software development processes, and usually a bachelor's degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with project management tools like Jira or Trello, agile methodologies, and certifications such as PMP or Scrum Master are often required. Excellent communication, leadership, and problem-solving abilities help foster collaboration between technical teams and stakeholders. These skills ensure projects are delivered on time, within scope, and to the desired quality standards in a dynamic tech environment.

Can a developer be a project manager?

A developer can transition into a project management role, especially if they develop skills in planning, communication, and leadership. Many project managers in tech have backgrounds in development and obtain certifications like PMP or Scrum Master to support their transition.

What is the difference between Developer Project Manager vs Software Developer?

Job description

Join Ramboll Energy and help deliver sustainable engineering solutions

Are you an experienced engineering project manager who enjoys leading technical teams, building trusted client relationships, and delivering complex projects from planning through closeout? Do you bring the technical judgment, commercial awareness, and communication skills needed to align multi-discipline teams around scope, budget, schedule, quality, and client expectations?

If so, this could be the opportunity for you.

Ramboll Energy is seeking a Project Manager, Engineering, to help lead multi-discipline engineering projects that support our clients and contribute to a more sustainable future. In this role, you will guide project teams, coordinate across engineering disciplines, manage project performance, and serve as a key point of connection between clients, technical teams, and Ramboll leadership.

You will join a collaborative, open, and empowering culture where project managers are expected to lead with accountability, curiosity, sound judgment, and a commitment to delivering high-quality work. The current draft identifies this role as part of Ramboll’s Energy business and connects it to Ramboll’s broader sustainable change mission.

Your new role

As our new Engineering Project Manager, you will be responsible for leading engineering projects through the full project lifecycle — from development and planning through execution, delivery, and closeout. You will manage the technical, commercial, and relationship aspects of assigned projects while helping teams perform at their best.

This is a highly visible role for someone who can combine engineering knowledge, project management discipline, client-facing confidence, and project team leadership. You will help establish clear project expectations, coordinate multi-discipline work, manage risk, support financial performance, and maintain strong communication with clients and internal stakeholders.

Your key responsibilities will be:

  • Lead multi-discipline engineering projects from planning through execution and closeout, with accountability for scope, schedule, budget, quality, and client satisfaction.

  • Coordinate engineering disciplines, project controls, technical leads, and support functions to maintain alignment around project objectives and deliverables.

  • Serve as a trusted client-facing project leader, building strong relationships through proactive communication, responsiveness, and sound technical judgment.

  • Manage project financial performance, including budgets, forecasts, change management, invoicing support, cash flow awareness, and timely escalation of project risks.

  • Apply Ramboll’s project delivery model, tools, and best practices to support consistent project execution and predictable outcomes.

  • Identify, assess, and manage project risks, including technical, contractual, resource, and schedule-related risks.

  • Lead project meetings, client communications, internal coordination sessions, and project status reporting.

  • Support proposal development, project planning, scope definition, and smooth transition from pursuit to execution where needed.

  • Foster a collaborative project environment where team members are engaged, informed, and empowered to deliver high-quality work.

  • Resolve issues and conflicts constructively, negotiate practical solutions, and maintain team momentum through changing project conditions.

  • Support client development through regular client engagement, awareness of client needs, and alignment with Ramboll’s Energy and Industry strategy.

Your new team

You will be part of Ramboll’s Energy business, working with colleagues who plan, design, and implement energy solutions for clients across the value chain.

You will work with talented engineers, discipline leads, project managers, technical specialists, and client account teams who bring local experience and global knowledge to complex project challenges. This role is ideal for a project leader who is energized by technical complexity, client interaction, and the opportunity to help teams deliver meaningful work.

Qualifications about you

From the moment you join Ramboll, we will support your personal and professional development so you can continue to grow with the company. For this role, we are looking for candidates who bring a strong combination of engineering knowledge, project management capability, client relationship skills, and leadership maturity.

The ideal candidate will bring:

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering, science, or a related technical field.

  • 8+ years of relevant experience managing engineering, industrial, energy, manufacturing, infrastructure, or similarly complex technical projects.

  • Strong understanding of project scope, budget, schedule, risk, change management, quality, and client communication.

  • Demonstrated ability to lead multi-discipline engineering teams and coordinate technical work across engineering functions.

  • Strong leadership and interpersonal skills, including influencing, coaching, mentoring, conflict resolution, negotiation, and team motivation.

  • Project Management Professional Certification preferred

What we can offer you

At Ramboll, you will have the opportunity to work at the heart of sustainable change while growing your career in an open, collaborative, and empowering environment.

  • Meaningful project work that supports clients and contributes to sustainable solutions.

  • A collaborative culture where technical expertise, curiosity, and diverse perspectives are valued.

  • Opportunities to lead complex projects and grow as a project management and business leader.

  • Access to experienced colleagues, technical specialists, clients, and projects that provide continuous learning.

  • Long-term thinking and stability as part of a foundation-owned company.

  • Support for your professional development and career growth.
