What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Developer Experience Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Developer Experience Engineer, you need a strong background in software development, user experience (UX), and technical documentation, often supported by a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with programming languages, API design, DevOps tools, and developer platforms is typically required, along with experience using version control systems like Git. Outstanding communication, empathy, and problem-solving skills help you understand developer pain points and advocate for their needs. These skills are crucial for building intuitive tools and resources that empower developers to be more productive and satisfied.

How does a Developer Experience Engineer typically collaborate with product and engineering teams?

Developer Experience Engineers work closely with both product and engineering teams to identify pain points and streamline workflows for internal and external developers. They often participate in cross-functional meetings, provide input on API design, documentation, and tooling, and gather feedback to advocate for developer needs. This role requires strong communication skills and a proactive approach to ensure that development environments, onboarding processes, and support resources are optimized for productivity and satisfaction.

What is a Developer Experience Engineer?

A Developer Experience Engineer is a professional focused on improving the overall experience and productivity of developers using a particular platform, product, or tool. Their responsibilities include designing intuitive APIs, creating clear documentation, building helpful tooling, and gathering feedback from developers to identify pain points. By optimizing these areas, they help make it easier and more enjoyable for developers to build, test, and deploy software. The goal is to reduce friction in the development process, increase satisfaction, and foster a strong developer community.

Job description

Role overview

The DevX Tools team is hiring a Software Development Engineer II. The DevX Tools team is part of Engineering Platform's Developer Experience organization. We are responsible for improving the developer experience through tooling, automation, and centralization of critical information needed by developers across the organization. Our tools - including an Internal Developer Portal and an Automated Slack Messaging Systems are used daily by 280+ engineers and are foundational to how CarGurus ships, discovers, and builds software.

As a Software Development Engineer II (IC2), you will contribute to building and maintaining the internal platforms and tools that empower every product engineering team at CarGurus. You'll work alongside experienced engineers in a collaborative, hybrid environment and grow your skills across the full stack, from backend services and APIs to cloud-native integrations and agentic automations.

What you'll do

  • Design, develop, test, deploy, and operate well-architected software systems that improve the developer experience across CarGurus engineering.
  • Build features for Showroom, our internal developer portal that powers deployments, governance, software catalogs, and self-service workflows.
  • Support initiatives such as jobs replatforming, AI-powered code review tooling, agent-driven provisioning workflows, AI-powered AWS infrastructure provisioning and CI/CD pipeline modernization.
  • Facilitate the modernization of an internal developer portal into an AI-first developer platform, introducing AI-powered tooling to streamline workflows, enhancing the developer experience, and supporting large-scale, multi-repository engineering environments.

What you'll bring

  • 2+ years of professional software development experience.
  • Strong foundation in Java and familiarity with object-oriented design, algorithms, and data structures.
  • Experience building web applications or backend services, ideally with Spring Boot / Spring Framework.
  • A systematic approach to debugging issues within a service or module, including performance impacts.
  • Understanding of the testing pyramid and experience writing automated tests at multiple levels.
  • Familiarity with AWS services, Kubernetes, infrastructure-as-code practices and CI/CD tooling.
  • Exposure to front-end technologies (JavaScript, React, Remix) for building developer-facing UIs is a plus.
  • Interest in AI-powered developer tool and agentic workflows
