Desk Intern information

What are the common responsibilities and learning opportunities for a desk intern in a newsroom setting?

As a Desk Intern in a newsroom, you can expect to support the assignment desk by monitoring news wires, answering tip calls, and assisting with story research. You'll often help coordinate with reporters and crews in the field, gaining firsthand experience in newsroom operations and workflow. This role is an excellent opportunity to develop news judgment, multitasking skills, and an understanding of how stories are selected and developed. Many interns also get the chance to shadow experienced journalists, attend editorial meetings, and contribute ideas, which can be valuable for future roles in journalism.

What is a desk intern?

Desk Interns are entry-level professionals or students who assist with administrative, research, and operational tasks at a desk within an organization, often in fields like journalism, finance, or international relations. Their duties typically include data entry, preparing reports, scheduling, and supporting full-time staff with various projects. Desk Internships provide valuable hands-on experience, networking opportunities, and a chance to understand the inner workings of a particular industry or department. These roles are ideal for individuals looking to gain relevant skills and improve their employability in their chosen career path.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a desk intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Desk Intern, you need strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and proficiency in office software such as Microsoft Office or Google Workspace, often supported by current enrollment in a relevant academic program. Familiarity with scheduling tools, email platforms, and basic database management systems is typically required. Excellent communication, adaptability, and a proactive attitude are standout soft skills for this position. These skills ensure efficient workflow, smooth coordination, and a positive contribution to the team’s administrative operations.
