Design Verification Engineer Startup information

What does a Design Verification Engineer do at a startup?

A Design Verification Engineer at a startup is responsible for ensuring that hardware designs, such as integrated circuits or systems-on-chip, function as intended before they are manufactured. This typically involves developing and running simulations, creating testbenches, writing verification plans, and identifying bugs or mismatches in the design. In a startup environment, Design Verification Engineers often work closely with design, software, and product teams, and may need to wear multiple hats due to limited resources. Their work is crucial in reducing costly errors and speeding up the development cycle, helping the company deliver reliable products to market quickly.

What is the difference between Design Verification Engineer Startup vs Design Verification Engineer Large Corporation?

AspectDesign Verification Engineer StartupDesign Verification Engineer Large Corporation
CredentialsBachelor's or Master's in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or related fields; certifications like Certified Verification Engineer are commonSame as startup; often similar certifications and educational background
Work EnvironmentAgile, fast-paced, collaborative teams with flexible processesStructured, process-driven, with formal verification methodologies and documentation
Employer & Industry UsageStartups in semiconductor, electronics, or tech sectors; emphasis on innovationLarge tech, semiconductor, or electronics companies with established verification teams
Search & Comparison IntentUnderstanding role differences in startup vs large company

Both roles require similar technical skills and educational backgrounds. The main differences lie in work environment and processes, with startups being more flexible and fast-paced, while large corporations follow formal verification procedures. Candidates should consider their preferred work style when comparing these roles.

What unique challenges might a Design Verification Engineer face when working at a startup compared to a larger company?

At a startup, Design Verification Engineers often work with smaller teams and less established processes, which means you'll likely take on a broader range of responsibilities—from testbench development to hands-on debugging and even influencing verification methodologies. The fast-paced environment can present challenges such as tighter deadlines, limited resources, and rapidly changing project scopes. However, this setting also allows for closer collaboration with design, software, and product teams, fostering a greater sense of ownership and quicker decision-making. Your contributions are highly visible, and there's significant potential for accelerated career growth as the company scales.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Design Verification Engineer at a startup, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Design Verification Engineer at a startup, you need a strong background in digital design, verification methodologies, and a relevant degree in electrical engineering or computer science. Familiarity with tools like SystemVerilog, UVM, simulation environments, and version control systems is typically required, along with experience in scripting languages. Strong problem-solving abilities, adaptability, and effective communication are crucial soft skills, especially in fast-paced startup environments. These skills ensure efficient bug detection, robust product development, and successful collaboration within small, agile teams.

Job Description

About ATS Industrial Automation

With 20+ Years of experience bringing automation to nuclear projects, ATS Industrial Automation is expanding the capabilities of its existing nuclear division into the US. ATS provides world-leading automation tooling to the nuclear energy sector for new reactor builds, refurbishment, operations and maintenance.

About the Role

As a Intermediate Systems Design Engineer – Nuclear, you will play a key role in the design and delivery of complex, high reliability engineered systems supporting advanced nuclear and regulated industrial applications. Working as part of a multidisciplinary project team, you will help translate customer and regulatory requirements into robust system designs, gaining hands on exposure to the full system lifecycle—from early concept development through detailed design, integration, testing, and commissioning. This role offers the opportunity to develop a deep understanding of customer processes and technology while contributing to solutions where safety, quality, and performance are critical.

This position is well suited for an early career engineer who is eager to grow technical depth and systems thinking capability in a highly collaborative environment. You will be supported by experienced engineers while progressively building ownership of system requirements, technical risk mitigation, and verification activities. Through direct involvement in design reviews, analysis, proof of principle testing, and on site support, you will develop into a trusted technical contributor and subject matter expert, helping deliver innovative, compliant, and reliable systems that make a real world impact.

Specific Responsibilities

Supports the Development of System Requirements Definition and Verification

• Assist in the development, documentation, and maintenance of system level requirements, including functional, technical, and regulatory requirements.
• Support requirements flow down to subsystems, components, and third party equipment under the guidance of senior engineers.
• Participate in requirements verification planning and execution, including analysis, testing, and inspection activities.
• Assist with the preparation and execution of acceptance testing activities such as proof of principle testing, factory acceptance testing, and site acceptance testing.
• Evaluate design outputs (drawings, calculations, specifications, and test results) for conformance to defined requirements.
• Support the preparation of technical documentation such as verification matrices, test plans, and acceptance test reports.
• Assist in the identification and mitigation of technical risks through structured problem solving and design validation activities.

Subject Matter Expertise

• Learn and develop an understanding of customer processes, system functionality, and applicable nuclear and industrial standards.
• Support system level and component level analysis and calculations, such as functional capability, accuracy, structural considerations, pressure/flow, heat transfer, and reliability, as applicable.
• Assist in the preparation of technical studies, calculations, and design assessments to support system performance and compliance.
• Support the development of risk assessments, including Failure Modes and Effects Analyses (FMEAs) and Safety Risk Assessments.
• Assist with proof of principle studies and hands on testing to validate design assumptions and reduce technical risk.
• Develop familiarity with applicable codes, standards, quality requirements, and regulatory expectations relevant to nuclear and high reliability systems.

Work Cross Functionally with Other Teams

• Work collaboratively with mechanical, electrical, controls, software, assembly, and project management teams to support system design and execution.
• Participate in internal and customer design reviews, contribute technical input and learn best practices for design evaluation.
• Support coordination with third party vendors of process critical equipment, including review of technical specifications and participation in acceptance testing.
• Assist with system integration, startup, commissioning, and buy off activities, including on site support when required.
• Communicate technical information clearly and effectively within the project team and with customers, with support from senior engineers.
