What is a design technology manager?

A Design Technology Manager oversees the integration of technology and design processes within an organization, ensuring that creative teams have the tools and workflows they need to deliver high-quality digital or physical products. They bridge the gap between design and IT departments, manage design software and systems, and streamline project workflows. Their role often includes evaluating new technologies, implementing best practices, and supporting designers to improve efficiency and innovation. Design Technology Managers are crucial in industries like architecture, engineering, and digital media, where technology and design closely intersect.

How does a design technology manager typically collaborate with cross-functional teams during a project?

A Design Technology Manager plays a crucial role in bridging the gap between design, engineering, and IT departments. They often lead coordination meetings to align project goals, ensure that design tools and workflows are integrated seamlessly, and troubleshoot technical issues that arise. Collaboration usually involves regular communication with architects, designers, software developers, and project managers to ensure that design deliverables meet both aesthetic and technical requirements. This collaborative approach helps to streamline processes, reduce errors, and deliver successful project outcomes.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a design technology manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Design Technology Manager, you need expertise in design principles, project management, and a relevant degree in design, engineering, or a related field. Proficiency with CAD software, BIM tools, and familiarity with project management platforms like Asana or Trello is typically required, and certifications in design or project management (e.g., PMP) are valued. Strong leadership, effective communication, and problem-solving abilities help you guide teams and collaborate across departments. These skills ensure successful project delivery, innovation, and alignment between design objectives and organizational goals.

If you excel in hands-on design, enjoy solving complex mechanical issues, and take pride in leading and mentoring technical teams, this role offers the impact and ownership you're looking for.
What You'll Do
As a Lead Mechanical Design Engineer, you'll serve as a technical expert responsible for end-to-end ownership of engine component and system design. • Lead and Deliver High-Impact Designs
  • Own the design and development of new engine components, systems, and product improvements.
  • Define system and component technical requirements while working with cross-functional engineering teams.
  • Lead the 3D/2D design of large castings, forgings, machined components, and fabrications, including full GD&T definition and ECO release.
  • Drive Engineering Excellence
  • Perform engineering calculations, studies, and analysis to support both virtual and physical validation.
  • Lead design reviews, cross-functional development teams, and support prototype hardware builds from concept through serial release.
  • Guide continuous improvement of design practices, standards, tools, and methodologies.
  • Collaborate Across the Business
  • Provide technical expertise to manufacturing, supply chain, application engineering, service, marketing, and suppliers.
  • Support new product introductions (NPI), current product improvements, and root-cause problem solving across the organization.

What You'll Bring
  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Engineering Technology, or Mechanical Design Technology.
  • More than 6 years of mechanical design engineering experience-preferably with engine components, reciprocating internal combustion engines, or engine-driven equipment.
  • Strong proficiency in CREO, high-end 3D CAD, Windchill PLM, and Oracle ERP systems or similar systems.

What Will Help You Stand Out
  • Deep knowledge of GD&T, tolerance stack-ups, and precision mechanical design.
  • Experience with engine performance, FEA, simulation, testing, and mechanical development.
  • Strong understanding of materials, manufacturing processes, and assembly methods.
  • Hands-on experience with rapid prototyping, product validation, and design for manufacturability.
  • Proven success in NPI leadership or current product support engineering.
  • Excellent communication skills and comfort working in a global environment.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects with strong organizational and technical writing skills.

Additional Details:
  • Location: Waukesha, WI
  • Hybrid Work Schedule: Generally, 3 days onsite (Mon/Wed/Thu) and 2 days offsite (Mon/Fri). Specific days may adjust based on business requirements.
  • Travel: Occasional travel, up to 10%, which may include both domestic and international destinations.
  • Visa Sponsorship: This role is not eligible for visa sponsorship now or in the foreseeable future.
