A Day in the LifeAt Medtronic, our ASICs save lives. This means our designers need to understand the big picture of how their work impacts the end user, a patient. We have an integrated ASIC team enabling engineers to wear many hats from digital design, verification, the physical flow, to testing in the lab with opportunities to meet doctors and witness implants; which connects how our work directly impacts patients' lives. Our group is developing Medtronic's next generation of Cardiac Rhythm Management (CRM) products using innovative low power SoC methods to improve how our implantable devices provide pacing, defibrillation, and monitoring therapies.
At Medtronic, we bring bold ideas forward with speed and decisiveness to put patients first in everything we do. In-person exchanges are invaluable to our work. We're working a minimum of 4 days a week onsite as part of our commitment to fostering a culture of professional growth and cross-functional collaboration as we work together to engineer the extraordinary.
This position will be based in Mounds View, MN.

As a member of this Design Team, the Senior ASIC Design Engineer can be involved in all phases of product development, including design definition, verification planning / execution, physical implementation, design for testability, system integration, characterization, and failure analysis under a regulated quality and standard operating procedures. You will be an important part of an experienced product development team whose goal is to deliver the highest quality integrated circuits for use in life saving medical devices.

For this role we are particularly looking for ASIC engineers interested in supporting both design and verification with strengths in UVM. This strengthens the team's ability to adapt to shifting project needs and timelines.

Key Responsibilities

  • Micro-architecture: Transform high-level architectural requirements into detailed hardware specifications.
  • RTL Coding: Write clean, synthesizable, and high-performance RTL using SystemVerilog and Verilog.
  • Testbench Development: Build robust, scalable, and reusable verification environments from scratch using SystemVerilog and UVM.
  • Verification Strategy: Create detailed test plans, write constrained-random test cases, and develop functional coverage models.
  • Closure: Run regressions, debug RTL/testbench mismatches, and achieve 100% code and functional coverage.
  • Implementation Support: Collaborate with physical design teams on timing closure, synthesis, and formal verification (LEC).

Must Have: Minimum Requirements for Principal ASIC Design Engineer

  • Bachelors degree required
  • Minimum of 4 years of ASIC Design experience
  • Or Masters degree with minimum 2 years of ASIC Design experience
  • Or PhD with 0 years of ASIC Design experience.

  • Strong scripting skills (Python, TcL, Perl...)
  • Universal Verification Methodologies (UVM)

  • Low power design methods and power analysis
  • Digital Signal Processing (DSP)
  • Developing for mixed signal ICs with Digital Analog Boundary (DAB) crossings, A2D, D2A
  • Passion for automating processes and tool flows; including the use of agentic AI
  • Good communication skills (written and verbal) and ability to work and contribute in a team-based matrix environment
  • Professional/Academic/hands on exposure for digital and analog IC designs
  • Ability to demonstrate innovation in defining and solving problems
  • Ability to work in a team environment
  • Good organizational, reporting and presentation skills
  • Hands on experience with lab equipment: CPU debuggers, Oscilloscope, Power Supplies, DMM, etc.

Salary ranges for U.S (excl. PR) locations (USD):$108,000.00 - $162,000.00This position is eligible for a short-term incentive called the Medtronic Incentive Plan (MIP).The base salary range is applicable across the United States, excluding Puerto Rico and specific locations in California. The offered rate complies with federal and local regulations and may vary based on factors such as experience, certification/education, market conditions, and location. Compensation and benefits information pertains solely to candidates hired within the United States (local market compensation and benefits will apply for others).
