Position Overview

The Kiewit Power Engineering Group is seeking several mid-level and senior Structural Design Engineers to join our growing Calgary team!

The ideal candidates will be part of a growing team supporting all aspects of the construction process through innovative design engineering. You will contribute to conceptual design development, perform structural calculations, prepare plans, and support project execution to meet client needs while ensuring safety and quality. Candidates should possess experience in analyzing and designing foundations and steel structures.  

Depending on experience, the position may be at a Mid-Level or Senior-Level. You will be responsible for design execution, technical oversight, mentoring junior staff, and ensuring high-quality deliverables that meet client and project requirements while maintaining safety and efficiency.

Location

This position is based out of Calgary, Alberta with flexible work options. Travel to the US may be required on occasion.

Responsibilities

Mid-Level Structural Design Engineer
   Prepare structural designs for assigned projects, including research, selection of lateral force resistance systems, analysis, and drawing preparation for power generation and industrial projects.
   Apply department and industry standards in the preparation of calculations, drawings, and specifications.
   Coordinate with internal and external stakeholders, including other engineering disciplines, construction teams, vendors, fabricators, and owners to resolve structural issues.
   Understand and meet EPC contract requirements, RFPs, and other contractual obligations.
   Assist in preparing and updating project plans, schedules, and budgets.
   Support quality checks for engineering deliverables.
   Contribute to process improvements and evolving workflows.

Senior Structural Design Engineer 
   Lead structural design for assigned projects, including system selection, analysis, and development of construction documents. 
   Lead and develop project teams, providing technical direction and oversight. 
   Review and approve calculations, drawings, and specifications for accuracy and compliance with standards. 
   Mentor and direct entry- and mid-level engineers; monitor progress and provide coaching. 
   Coordinate with internal and external stakeholders, including multidisciplinary teams, construction partners, subcontractors, and owners. 
   Ensure compliance with EPC contracts, RFPs, and other contractual requirements. 
   Identify and manage scope changes and project risks. 
   Lead quality assurance and quality control efforts for engineering deliverables. 
   Prepare, monitor, and manage project plans, schedules, budgets, and staffing needs. 
   Support department leadership in achieving strategic and performance goals. 
   Drive process improvements, standards development, and workflow enhancements. 
   Contribute to market growth by adapting processes to new project types or sectors.

Qualifications

   A Bachelor's degree in Civil, Structural, or Architectural Engineering is required.
   Registered Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) in Alberta required. 
   P.E. designation is highly preferred but not required.
   A minimum of 4+ years of structural engineering and design experience is required.
   Experience in power generation or industrial markets is preferred. 
   Strong proficiency with engineering software such as SAP2000, SAFE, and Mathcad. 
   Advanced knowledge of engineering standards including ASCE 7, ACI 318, AISC 360, and IBC is preferred.
   Proven leadership experience in mentoring and guiding engineering teams. 
   Strong written and verbal communication skills. 
   Proficiency with spreadsheets, databases, and standard office software.
