Status: Part-time, 20 hours per week
Purpose:
This is an AmeriCorps position withArizona Conservation Corps (AZCC), which is an AmeriCorps program of Conservation Legacy. The member selected for this position will be serving at Arizona State University as an AmeriCorps member with Arizona Conservation Corps, and completing service projects with Arizona State University.
AZCC aims to continue the legacy of the Civilian Conservation Corps of the 1930's, and is focused on connecting youth, young adults, and recent era military veterans with communities and conservation service projects on public lands. AZCC operates programs across Arizona that engage individuals and strengthen communities through service and conservation. AZCC has program offices in Flagstaff, Phoenix, and Tucson.

For over 12 years, ASU's Julie Ann Wrigley Global Futures Laboratory's Rob and Melani Walton Sustainability Solutions Service (RMWSSS) has advanced innovative, scalable sustainability solutions by connecting universities, communities, and industry partners. Through applied research, education, and collaboration, the program addresses environmental and social challenges while supporting resilient communities and sustainable development worldwide.
Urban Nature, an initiative of RMWSSS, aims to grow the tree and shade canopy in metro Phoenix and foster a thriving urban forestry industry through community-industry partnerships.
Following a successful pilot, Urban Nature is developing services to support sustainable management of the urban tree canopy in metro Phoenix and aims to become self-sustaining beyond initial grant funding. By offering services to cities and land managers for tree care standards development and documentation, and creating visual training materials for field-based training to scale best practices for long-term urban canopy sustainability and ecosystem services.

Description of Duties:
Urban Nature is seeking a part-time Graphic Design Assistant to support visual communication, branding, and the development of graphic materials focused on sustainability and urban forestry initiatives.
The role includes assisting with the design and formatting of presentations, reports, and other visual materials, as well as creating visual assets that help communicate project outcomes in a clear and professional way. Occasional support with digital content may also be required.
- Key responsibilities include:
- Design and print digital communication materials.
- Support branding and visual consistency across projects.
- Assist with presentations, reports, and social media content.
- Collaborate with the Urban Nature team on outreach materials.
- Basic to intermediate knowledge of WordPress, as the position will also support the ongoing update and maintenance of the Urban Nature website, including content updates, information backup, and general website support.
The intern will have multiple and ongoing opportunities for job shadowing and networking with leaders in various strategic and field-based positions in university, community, and industry settings. Our team, comprised of leaders in strategic communication, community-based conservation, business development, urban planning, landscape design, agroforestry, and urban forestry will engage in collaborative mentoring with the intern related to the particular tasks the intern is completing / learning to complete.
Training will be provided in ASU and Urban Nature branding guidelines, guidelines for content creation for multiple stakeholders, ongoing mentoring / support from strategic communications and Urban Nature team, advanced Adobe trainings as needed, and relevant safety trainings as needed for site-specific photo or video activities.
Essential Responsibilities and Functions:
- Become familiar with Urban Nature initiative, audiences, branding guidelines and templates.
- Support web and marketing design and content needs.
- Support development of marketing campaign for ASU Dates.
- Support development of custom product packaging and signage for ASU Dates.
- Create visual assets for "Quick Guides" to support field-based trainings in urban forestry and agroforestry.
- Develop series of Quick Guides.
- Collaboration with Urban Nature team to create short-form video content for training and marketing purposes.
- Design and develop digital assets showcase impact.
- Design and develop graphics to visually highlight economic, health, and environmental benefits of trees.
- Design and develop graphics to visually highlight cost and impact of poor tree care and irrigation practices.
- Design and develop graphics to support Urban Nature platform / app development for use by multiple stakeholders.
Qualifications:
- United States citizen, United States national, or a lawful permanent resident alien.
- Has received a high school diploma or equivalency certificate; or has not dropped out of elementary or secondary school to enroll as an AmeriCorps participant, and agrees to obtain a high school diploma or its equivalent prior to using the education award.
- Agrees to provide information to establish eligibility and to complete a National Service Criminal History Check.
- A self-starter that demonstrates professionalism, both in demeanor and appearance.
- Good communication and organizational skills.
- 1-2+ years of education and/or experience in a design or marketing role
- Submission of a portfolio showcasing strong visual design, layout, and graphic communication skills.
- Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite (Illustrator, InDesign, Photoshop, Premiere)
- Provide examples of websites previously worked on, particularly those involving content updates, layout management, or WordPress support.
- Strong attention to detail for brand (typography, spacing, hierarchy, color palette)
- Ability to get feedback and iterate quickly
- Interest in AI tools and willingness to experiment with new design workflows and technologies
- Ability to work collaboratively and independently
- Must have reliable transportation and be over 18.
- The intern must be able to independently travel to work sites including ASU Tempe campus, with occasional or seasonal travel to other locations
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience with Adobe Creative Suite
- Experience with WordPress
- Strong visual communication and layout skills
- Interest in sustainability, urban design, or community initiatives
Physical Requirements:

Time Requirements:
Typically, this position is expected to serve part-time, 20 hours per week, but exact service schedules may vary. A half hour lunch break will not be counted towards AmeriCorps service. Member may be required to participate in national, state, or local service projects or events as part of their service term.
Orientation and Training:
Member will receive an Arizona Conservation Corps Individual Placement Program New Member Orientation at start of service that involves training on AmeriCorps prohibited and unallowable activities.

Work effectively as a member of a team despite potentially stressful and difficult conditions. This may require problem solving on an interpersonal or group level as well as a willingness to accept differences.
Effectively communicate ideas and concerns as they arise directly to supervisors, co-workers and agency staff.Appropriately represent Arizona Conservation Corps, Arizona State University, and AmeriCorps to the public and partners at all times.
Safety and Judgment:
Effectively perceive, understand, and follow direction by others so that you will be able to successfully execute techniques to manage hazards.Stay alert and focused for several hours at a time while traveling and working in varied weather conditions.

In accordance with a drug free workplace, alcohol and drugs are prohibited while participating in AmeriCorps and program activities and while on organization property.
Benefits:
- Segal AmeriCorps Education Award of $1,565.08 with successful completion of each 300 hour AmeriCorps term (total of $3,130.16 for this position).

Evaluation and Reporting:
As an AmeriCorps member, performance will be evaluated on whether the member has completed the required number of hours, the member has satisfactorily completed assignments, and if the member has met other performance criteria that were clearly communicated at the beginning of the term of service. Reporting requirements involve, but are not limited to, bi-weekly timesheets and accomplishment tracking.
