What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a deputy program director, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Deputy Program Director, you need strong leadership, project management expertise, and in-depth knowledge of the program’s subject area, often supported by an advanced degree and relevant experience. Familiarity with program management software (such as MS Project or Asana), budget tracking tools, and sometimes certifications like PMP or PRINCE2 is typically required. Deputy Program Directors play a key leadership role in facilitating communication, solving problems, and driving the overall success of their programs.

You will also work directly with government customers and industry partners to help drive mission success.

  • Facilitate project meetings, document meeting minutes, and track action items through completion.
  • Manage project scope and change requests while ensuring contractual and technical objectives are achieved.
  • Assist with staffing plans, workload balancing, and resource forecasting.
  • Continuously improve project management processes, documentation, and reporting to increase program efficiency and effectiveness.

  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a dynamic, mission-focused environment.
  • Ability to travel up to 10%.

  • Project Management Professional (PMP), CAPM, PRINCE2, or equivalent program/project management certification
