What is a deployment manager?

A deployment manager oversees the release of updates to technical systems. Your job duties include developing release schedules, providing support during the technical release process, and ensuring that production systems are functional following a successful release. A career as a deployment manager requires you have some formal qualifications and education, typically a bachelor's degree in computer science, software engineering, or a related field. To excel as a deployment manager, you should have strong communications, analytical, and organizational skills. Prior experience working with technical systems during an implementation phase will set you ahead of other candidates.

What does a deployment manager do?

A Deployment Manager is responsible for planning, coordinating, and overseeing the rollout of new software, systems, or updates within an organization. They ensure that deployments are executed smoothly, on schedule, and with minimal disruption to business operations. Their duties often include managing resources, communicating with stakeholders, troubleshooting issues during deployment, and ensuring compliance with company policies. Deployment Managers play a key role in bridging the gap between technical teams and business units to facilitate successful project delivery.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a deployment manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Deployment Manager, you need strong project management skills, experience in software or systems deployment, and typically a relevant degree in IT or engineering. Familiarity with deployment tools such as Jenkins, Ansible, or Azure DevOps, and certifications like PMP or Agile/Scrum, are often required. Exceptional organizational skills, leadership, and effective communication are vital soft skills for coordinating teams and managing stakeholder expectations. These abilities ensure smooth, timely, and successful deployments that align with business goals and minimize operational disruptions.

What are some common challenges deployment managers face when coordinating large-scale software releases?

Deployment Managers often encounter challenges such as aligning cross-functional teams, managing tight release schedules, and ensuring minimal downtime during rollouts. Coordinating between development, QA, and operations requires strong communication skills and attention to detail to avoid missteps. Additionally, they must anticipate and troubleshoot unexpected issues quickly to maintain system stability and meet stakeholder expectations.

Job description

Job Description
Global Manufacturing Electrical & SDV is looking for innovators who thrive in tough challenges and are passionate about tackling meaningful work that will shape the future of the automotive industry. This isn't a role for those looking for an easy path-it's for those who embrace change, push through obstacles, and take ownership of complex problems. While there will be long days and moments that test your resilience, you'll find purpose in your work, flexibility to prioritize your family, and the support of a people-first culture. If you're ready to grow, thrive, and make a real impact, we'd love to hear from you.
WHY: Reduce vehicle yard holds and improve product quality by ensuring timely, accurate deployment of ECU software across manufacturing plants and yard operations-enabling vehicles to meet release and readiness targets.
WHAT: Lead a team responsible for executing ECU software deployment across GM manufacturing sites-owning planning, coordination, and execution to ensure consistent, high-quality results at scale.
HOW: Lead end-to-end deployment operations-planning events, resourcing teams, and overseeing execution across multiple sites-while partnering with engineering and manufacturing to resolve issues in real time, standardize processes, and continuously improve deployment performance.
This role is ideal for technical leads or supervisors with experience in vehicle diagnostics, ECU flashing, or manufacturing operations who enjoy leading teams in fast-paced, hands-on environments and driving execution across multiple sites.
Work Arrangement - Onsite
The successful candidate is expected to report to the GMNA plants, warehouses, and Warren Tech Center on a full-time basis. This role requires 50% or greater domestic and international travel.
What You'll Do (Responsibilities):
  • Lead reflash events across multiple GM manufacturing sites, ensuring execution readiness and quality outcomes.
  • Plan and coordinate reflash events in partnership with software and engineering teams, aligning timing to VeSCoM breakpoints and software release schedules.
  • Develop and execute reflash team resource plans, including staffing, deployment, and site-specific support across manufacturing locations.
  • Establish and manage the reflash environment at GM manufacturing sites, providing on-site leadership to GM team members and contractors during ECU reflashing activities.
  • Collaborate with manufacturing, engineering, and suppliers to understand current reflash processes and identify opportunities for standardization and continuous improvement.
  • Develop and deliver training sessions for new team members and contractors, supported by clear, standardized documentation and work instructions.
  • Promote a safe work environment and ensure full compliance with company policies, quality standards, and regulatory requirements.
  • Foster a forward-thinking, inclusive work culture that embraces change and proactively prepares for future organizational and industry challenges.
  • Build, maintain, and strengthen strategic relationships across software, manufacturing, engineering, and program management organizations to align priorities and enable future innovation.
  • Provide day-to-day leadership, coaching, and guidance to team members and contractors, reinforcing accountability, engagement, and GM leadership behaviors.

Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications)
  • Demonstrated experience leading teams in high-tempo, operational environments with responsibility for execution and outcomes.
  • Hands-on experience working with vehicle ECUs, embedded systems, or in-vehicle software deployment.
  • Working knowledge of automotive communication protocols (e.g., CAN, Ethernet) and ECU interaction fundamentals.
  • Experience using vehicle diagnostic and reprogramming tools (e.g., NeoVI, vSPY, DPS, or equivalent).
  • Understanding of end-of-line (EOL) manufacturing and validation processes, including software flashing, verification, and issue resolution.
  • Proven ability to troubleshoot software/hardware integration issues in vehicle or manufacturing environments.
  • Experience coordinating work across engineering, manufacturing, and software teams to execute deployment activities.
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to align cross-functional teams and provide clear updates at all levels.
  • Willingness to travel extensively (50%) across domestic and international GM sites.

What Could Give You a Competitive Edge (Preferred Qualifications)
  • Prior experience leading reflash, software deployment, or launch support activities in a manufacturing environment.
  • Experience in vehicle assembly plants, yard operations, or post-production vehicle handling.
  • Familiarity with software release processes, version control, and breakpoint management (e.g., VeSCoM).
  • Understanding of SDV architecture and OTA/update strategies in a manufacturing or post-production context.
  • Experience developing standard work, training materials, or deployment playbooks.
  • Exposure to data analysis, reporting, or issue tracking tools used in manufacturing or software deployment.
  • Bachelor's degree in engineering, Computer Science, or related technical field (or equivalent hands-on experience).
