What is demand planning?

A Demand Planning job involves forecasting customer demand to ensure that a company has the right products available at the right time. Demand Planners analyze historical sales data, market trends, and other factors to create accurate demand forecasts. They collaborate with supply chain, sales, and marketing teams to optimize inventory levels and minimize shortages or excess stock. Effective demand planning helps businesses improve service levels, reduce costs, and enhance overall supply chain efficiency.

What are some of the main challenges faced in demand planning?

One of the primary challenges in demand planning is managing unpredictable fluctuations in customer demand, which requires constant adjustment of forecasts and close coordination with sales and operations teams. Demand planners must also balance the need to minimize stockouts without overstocking, which can impact working capital and customer satisfaction. Additionally, integrating and analyzing large amounts of historical sales data from multiple sources can be complex. Tackling these challenges effectively is highly valued by employers, as it ensures supply chains run efficiently and business goals are met.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in demand planning, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Demand Planning professional, you need a strong analytical mindset, proficiency in forecasting techniques, and typically a degree in supply chain management, business, or a related field. Experience with demand planning software such as SAP APO, Oracle Demantra, or advanced Excel modeling is often required, and certifications like APICS CPIM can be advantageous. Exceptional communication, problem-solving, and cross-functional collaboration skills help set top candidates apart. These skills are crucial for accurately predicting customer demand, minimizing inventory costs, and ensuring seamless coordination within the supply chain.

Is demand planning a good career?

Demand planning is a strategic role that involves forecasting product or service demand to optimize inventory and supply chain operations. It requires analytical skills, proficiency with planning tools, and often offers opportunities for advancement and stability within manufacturing, retail, and logistics industries.

Your role at Clorox:

We're looking for a highly skilled Kinaxis RapidResponse IT Analyst to help shape and optimize our end-to-end supply chain planning capabilities. In this role, you'll partner closely with Planning, Supply Chain Operations, and the Kinaxis Center of Excellence to drive innovative solutions across Demand, Supply, S&OP/IBP, Inventory Optimization, and Control Tower processes. You'll play a key role in enhancing platform performance, ensuring data integrity, and enabling seamless integration across our technology landscape. This is an exciting opportunity to influence business outcomes, improve planning effectiveness, and empower users through continuous improvement and digital transformation initiatives.
*Please note this role does not provide sponsorship support.*

In this role, you will:

  • Administer and configure Kinaxis RapidResponse (Resources, Tables, Tasks, Workbooks, Alerts, Roles, and Access Controls), maintaining robust environments across DEV/TEST/PROD.
  • Implement and optimize planning applications: Demand Planning, Supply Planning, Inventory Optimization, Control Tower/monitoring, and S&OP/IBP scenarios.
  • Participate in and support the end-to-end design, configuration, testing, and continuous improvement of integrated planning processes across Kinaxis RapidResponse and SAP (PP/DS, PP, ATP, and supply planning functions), collaborating with functional and technical teams to ensure seamless planning execution and system integration.
  • Design and maintain data models and mappings for master (items, locations, BOMs), transactional (orders, forecasts, receipts), calendars, and attributes required for planning and allocation.
  • Operate and monitor integrations between RapidResponse and SAP S/4HANA (and/or ECC), including middleware pipelines (e.g., MuleSoft), troubleshooting data issues, reprocessing jobs, and reconciling deltas endtoend.
  • Develop and maintain data quality checks, exception dashboards, and alerting to proactively address data readiness and plan health.
  • Lead performance tuning (scenario size, memory usage, query optimization) and platform diagnostics; drive rootcause analysis and permanent fixes for recurring issues.
  • Build and govern scenario management, playbooks, and whatif analysis frameworks for planners and leadership.
  • Own change management: author technical designs, configuration documentation, and CRs; plan and execute regression testing, UAT, and controlled releases aligned to cutover timelines.
  • Ensure security, compliance, and auditability (SOX, data privacy), including SSO, rolebased access, and evidence collection.
  • Partner with a Kinaxis COE, planners, Supply Chain SMEs, and Finance to translate business needs into stable, scalable technical solutions.
  • Provide L2/L3 operational support with defined SLAs; participate in oncall rotations for critical planning cycles.
  • Measure and report KPIs (forecast accuracy, plan adherence, allocation accuracy, integration reliability); drive continuous improvement backlog and automation opportunities.
  • Create user enablement materials and deliver training to planners and super users; promote best practices in scenario building and governance.
  • Coordinate vendor/partner activities and align roadmaps for upgrades, quarterly maintenance, and feature adoption.

What we look for:

  • 10 years of IT/Supply Chain technology experience, including 5+ years administering/configuring Kinaxis RapidResponse in enterprise environments.
  • Handson expertise with RapidResponse data structures, tasks, resources, workbooks, and security; proven experience implementing Demand, Supply, and S&OP/IBP applications.
  • Demonstrated integration experience between RapidResponse and SAP S/4HANA (or ECC) using APIs, flatfile interfaces, or middleware (e.g., MuleSoft); strong data reconciliation skills.
  • Solid data modeling and SQL skills; fluency with one scripting language (e.g., Python or PowerShell) for automation and diagnostics.
  • Strong understanding of supply chain planning concepts (MRP/DRP, ATP, pegging, allocation, inventory optimization, and constraintbased planning).
  • Experience with Agile delivery (Scrum/Kanban), backlog management (Jira/Azure DevOps), and CI/CD for configuration and integration assets.
  • Excellent problemsolving and stakeholder communication skills; ability to translate planner needs into technical designs and explain tradeoffs to leadership.
  • Bachelor's degree in Information Systems, Supply Chain, Engineering, or related field; advanced degree a plus.
  • Relevant certifications preferred: Kinaxis RapidResponse (Level 1/2/3 or Professional), SAP S/4 (PP/MM/SD/IBP), MuleSoft (Integration/Platform) is desired.
  • Experience implementing Control Tower visualizations and exceptiondriven workflows in RapidResponse is desired.
  • Background in SAP modules supporting planning (PP/DS, APO/IBP, EWM) and master data governance is desired.
  • Exposure to enterprise integration programs connecting RapidResponse to SAP via MuleSoft or similar (e.g., "Vista"), including cutover and hypercare support is desired.
  • Familiarity with data engineering pipelines (Informatica, Azure Data Factory) and modern observability (logging/metrics/tracing) is desired.
