Defense Electrical Engineer information

What are Defense Electrical Engineers?

Defense Electrical Engineers are specialized professionals who design, develop, test, and oversee the manufacturing of electrical equipment used in military and defense applications. Their work often involves creating advanced electronic systems for communication, surveillance, navigation, and weapons systems that must meet rigorous safety and reliability standards. These engineers collaborate with other defense professionals and must stay up-to-date with evolving technologies and security requirements. Their expertise is critical to ensuring the effectiveness and safety of defense systems in challenging environments.

What are some common challenges faced by Defense Electrical Engineers when working on military projects?

Defense Electrical Engineers often navigate complex challenges such as adhering to strict security protocols, meeting rigorous performance and reliability standards, and integrating cutting-edge technologies within legacy defense systems. Collaborating with multidisciplinary teams—including mechanical engineers, software developers, and project managers—is essential for ensuring that designs meet project specifications and regulatory compliance. Additionally, they may face tight deadlines and the need to rapidly adapt to evolving defense requirements, making strong problem-solving and communication skills crucial.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Defense Electrical Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Defense Electrical Engineer, you need a solid background in electrical engineering principles, circuit design, and systems analysis, typically supported by a bachelor’s or master’s degree in electrical engineering. Familiarity with technical tools such as MATLAB, CAD software, and industry-specific standards, as well as security clearance and certifications like PE (Professional Engineer), are often required. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective teamwork and communication skills are essential soft skills in this role. These competencies ensure the development of reliable, secure, and innovative defense solutions that meet stringent safety and regulatory requirements.

What is the difference between Defense Electrical Engineer vs Defense Systems Engineer?

AspectDefense Electrical EngineerDefense Systems Engineer
CredentialsBachelor's or higher in Electrical Engineering, security clearance often requiredBachelor's or higher in Systems Engineering, security clearance often required
Work EnvironmentDesigning electrical components, circuits, and systems for defense applicationsIntegrating and managing complex defense systems, including electrical and software components
Industry UsagePrimarily in electrical hardware development for defense projectsInvolved in system-level integration across multiple engineering disciplines

Defense Electrical Engineers focus on designing and developing electrical hardware and systems for defense applications, while Defense Systems Engineers oversee the integration of various subsystems, including electrical, software, and mechanical components. Both roles require security clearances and collaborate closely in defense projects, but their core responsibilities differ in scope and focus.

Electrical Engineer
Tucson, AZ
Company Overview

Ondas Holdings Inc (NASDAQ:ONDS) is building a new kind of intelligence company, one designed for a world where speed, autonomy, and decision advantage matter more than ever. By combining multi-domain platforms, advanced sensing, secure networks, and AI-enabled analytics, Ondas helps defense, government, and critical infrastructure customers transform complex mission data into decision-ready insights when and where they matter most.

Ondas Sentinel is Ondas' U.S. based defense division, purpose-built to deliver U.S. made, U.S. delivered capabilities for the Department of Defense and allied ministries of defense. The division brings together advanced autonomous systems, mission technologies, and intelligence solutions that help customers create persistent awareness, operate with confidence, and make faster decisions in complex and contested environments.

The Stratospheric ISR business unit within Ondas Sentinel is focused on one of the most unique mission areas in aerospace and defense: manufacturing and operating high-altitude stratospheric balloon systems. Few companies in the world can do this work at operational scale. That means our teams are not simply maintaining existing systems; they are building new capabilities, solving first-of-their-kind challenges, and helping define what persistent.

Job Description

The ideal candidate will be responsible for developing avionics systems, power systems, and communication systems based on a single board computer architecture, such as Raspberry Pi. This role demands a fast-paced approach to design, from concept to implementation, with an emphasis on out-of-the-box thinking and the operationalization of off-the-shelf components for use in high-altitude environments.

Role Responsibilities:

·         Design and development of complex electrical systems for avionics applications, ensuring simplicity and modularity.

·         Rapidly conceptualize, design, and prototype innovative, out of the box solutions for avionics systems, power systems and communication systems based on single board computer architectures.

·         Employ advanced circuit design and power system knowledge to create and enhance electrical devices capable of operating in the stratosphere.

·         Demonstrate analytical prowess in solving unconventional engineering problems, designing experiments, and analyzing intricate data sets.

·         Innovate and push the boundaries of electrical engineering, developing cutting-edge systems and fostering a culture of creativity.

·         Provide expertise in complex circuit analysis and predict circuit behavior under challenging conditions.

·         Document designs thoroughly, write detailed test plans and procedures, and produce technical documentation that sets organizational standards.

·         Communicate complex technical ideas effectively to diverse audiences, including technical reporting and presentations.

·         Maintain an exceptional level of precision and attention to detail in all tasks, ensuring the highest standard of system performance and accuracy.

·         Lead and collaborate with project teams, integrating various disciplines and mentoring others in teamwork and collaboration techniques.

·         Apply advanced theories and methods to design and analysis, guiding the team in problem-solving.

Qualifications:

·         Electrical Engineering degree or other technical degree with equivalent work experience

·         3+ years of Electrical Engineering experience

·         Proficient with analog and digital circuit design, building, and testing circuits in a lab environment

·         Proven experience in advanced circuit design, power systems, and avionics systems.

·         Demonstrated experience with single board computer systems, such as Raspberry Pi, and the ability to ruggedize  commercial off-the-shelf components for non-standard environments.

·         Strong background in technical writing and documentation.

·         Excellent communication and presentation skills.
