Position Summary

As a Service Technician, you'll be responsible for conducting basic diagnostics, service repairs, and maintenance tasks on both customer and dealer-owned agricultural and turf equipment. You may also be called upon to provide in-field service to support our customers, with occasional guidance from the Service Manager, Service Location Manager, Shop Foreman, or senior technicians.

Job Responsibilities
  • Conduct basic diagnostics and repairs on agricultural and turf equipment, including established Ag Management Solutions (AMS) products.
  • Participate in Service EDUCATE Training programs to enhance skills and knowledge.
  • Initiate self-training opportunities with tools and provided resources by the dealership.
  • Stay updated on existing products and pursue additional technical and product knowledge through dealership training programs, manufacturer training, and on-the-job learning.
  • Diagnose and support machine systems, including Precision Ag technology.
  • Maintain the condition of vehicles, inventory, tools, and equipment.
  • Ensure a clean and organized work area and perform tasks in a neat and orderly fashion.
  • Adhere to all safety rules and regulations during work assignments.
  • Complete all required paperwork and forms using ExpertServices accurately and on time.
  • Track time accurately on a timecard and account for all materials used in assigned duties.
  • Deliver excellent customer service and uphold a positive dealer image.

Performance Requirements:

  • Meet or exceed effective labor rate goal ~ targeting $160.
  • Maintain a minimum 85% labor performance.
  • Dedicate a minimum of 1 hour per week to work alongside a mentor.
  • Actively complete and stay up to date on all assigned training.
Qualifications
  • Proficient knowledge of mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic systems used in the repair of agricultural and turf equipment.
  • Ability to perform basic repairs and maintenance tasks using specialized tools and equipment following Technical Manual procedures.
  • Familiarity with Service Advisor and basic computer functions.
  • Capability to operate vehicles and equipment used for diagnostic purposes.
  • Minimum of 1 year of experience performing service repairs.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to lift at least 75 lbs. repeatedly.
  • Basic Service Technician certification.
  • High School Diploma or equivalent experience required.
  • A valid driver's license is required.
Preferred Qualifications
  • John Deere Service Technician certification is preferred.
  • Associate's degree preferred.
  • Forklift license is preferred.

Compensation

The following represents Valley Plains Equipment compensation estimation based on market data and placement of internal employees. This is a hourly role with a starting base of $20.00 and going up to $42.00 based on experience. There is also a monthly Service Technician Incentive Program that allows technicians to earn additional income that is tied to Technician Performance.

Experience Levels will determine the incentive amounts for a candidate as defined below:

  • John Deere Technician Experience - Defined as 3+ years in a technician role working with John Deere equipment and products.
  • Non-John Deere Technician Experience - Defined as 3+ years in Service Technician roles working with farming eqipment other than John Deere Agricultural Equipment.
  • Industry Experience (Non-Ag) - Defined as 3+ years in related Technician positions outside agriculture equipment (Heavy Equipment, Diesel Mechanic experience)
  • No Experience - Candidates with the attitude and aptitude to succeed.
