How much do deep sea mining jobs pay per year?

As of Jul 3, 2026, the average yearly pay for deep sea mining in the United States is $126,935.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $113,500.00 and $140,000.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What is the highest paying ocean job?

Deep sea mining engineers and specialists tend to be among the highest-paid ocean-related jobs, earning high salaries due to the technical expertise, specialized equipment, and challenging environment involved. These roles often require advanced degrees, certifications, and experience working with underwater robotics and mining technology.

What are the typical work conditions and schedule like for professionals in deep sea mining?

Deep sea mining professionals typically work in rotations, such as several weeks on-site aboard specialized vessels or offshore platforms followed by extended periods off. The work environment can be physically demanding and involves operating in confined, remote, and sometimes harsh marine conditions. Teams are highly collaborative, consisting of engineers, technicians, geologists, and environmental specialists who must communicate closely to ensure safety and operational efficiency. Shift patterns can be long and may involve night work, but employers usually provide comprehensive on-site accommodations, meals, and recreational facilities to support crew well-being. This structure allows for focused work during assignments and significant downtime between rotations for rest and personal time.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Deep Sea Mining position, and why are they important?

To thrive in Deep Sea Mining, you need a background in marine engineering, geology, or environmental science, often supported by relevant degrees and experience with underwater extraction technologies. Familiarity with remotely operated vehicles (ROVs), sonar mapping systems, and advanced safety certifications like HAZMAT and offshore survival training is crucial. Strong teamwork, problem-solving, and the ability to adapt to challenging environments are standout soft skills in this field. These competencies ensure safe, efficient resource extraction while minimizing environmental impact in a highly specialized and remote setting.

What is a Deep Sea Mining job?

A Deep Sea Mining job involves extracting valuable minerals and metals from the ocean floor using specialized equipment and technology. Workers in this field may operate remotely controlled mining machines, conduct environmental assessments, or oversee mechanical and logistical operations on offshore vessels. These jobs require expertise in engineering, geology, marine science, and robotics. Due to the extreme ocean conditions, workers must also follow strict safety protocols.

What is the highest paying job in mining?

In deep sea mining, the highest paying roles are typically senior engineers, project managers, and specialized technical experts, often earning six-figure salaries due to the complex environment and technical expertise required. These positions usually require advanced skills, certifications, and experience working with specialized equipment in challenging conditions.

Is deep-sea mining profitable?

Deep-sea mining can be profitable due to the high demand for rare minerals and metals used in technology and renewable energy. However, it involves significant upfront investment, technical challenges, and environmental considerations that can impact overall profitability for companies and workers in the field.

What companies do deep-sea mining?

Several companies are involved in deep-sea mining, including Nautilus Minerals, DeepGreen Metals, and Ocean Infinity. These companies focus on extracting minerals from the ocean floor, often requiring specialized equipment and environmental assessments. The industry is regulated by international bodies like the International Seabed Authority.

Job description

Saronic Technologies is a leader in revolutionizing autonomy at sea, dedicated to developing state-of-the-art solutions that enhance maritime operations through autonomous and intelligent platforms.
Job Overview
Saronic Technologies is seeking a Senior Electrical Engineer with deep experience in the design, specification, and validation of vessel/vehicle electronic systems. This position will play a key role in developing and evaluating ruggedized electrical architectures for autonomous maritime platforms - ensuring performance, durability, and compliance under shock, vibration, thermal, and marine conditions.
The ideal candidate has a proven track record designing or specifying electrical and electronic systems for marine, automotive, defense, or mining vehicles, with a focus on system integration, environmental qualification, and manufacturability. This is a design and development driven, hands-on role at the intersection of design innovation and field performance.
Key Responsibilities
  • Lead the design, specification, and validation of electrical and electronic systems for autonomous maritime platforms operating in extreme environments.
  • Develop and document system requirements and specifications for electrical subsystems including power distribution, computing, sensing, and communications.
  • Create engineering drawings such as one-line diagrams, ladder schematics, networking diagrams, and similar.
  • Evaluate and select or design components suitable for reliable operation in harsh environments.
  • Conduct trade studies and benchmarking of commercially available systems and technologies from adjacent industries (automotive, defense, mining).
  • Design and validate system architectures that optimize reliability, maintainability, and environmental protection.
  • Collaborate with mechanical, software, and autonomy teams to ensure seamless system integration and interoperability.
  • Support prototype builds, troubleshooting, and commissioning through lab and field testing - including dockside and at-sea trials.
  • Author detailed design documentation, including specifications, trade studies, test reports, and system integration standards.
  • Mentor junior engineers in general design principles and ruggedization techniques.
Required Qualifications
  • B.S. or M.S. in Electrical Engineering or related field.
  • Proficiency in schematic and design tools (AutoCAD Electrical, SolidWorks Electrical, Zuken, or similar).
  • 7+ years of professional experience designing electrical and electronic systems for marine, industrial, harsh, or safety-critical environments.
  • Proven experience with rugged electrical system design including power distribution systems, industrial automation, and network design.
  • Familiarity with low voltage AC (<1000VAC) and DC (12/24/48V) power distribution architectures.
  • Experience with fieldbus protocols such as ethernet, CAN, RS485, RS232, and similar.
  • Understanding of EMI/EMC design principles and mitigation techniques.
  • Excellent technical documentation and communication skills.
  • Experience creating engineering drawings such as one-line diagrams, ladder schematics, network drawings, and similar.
  • Ability to thrive in hands-on R&D environments that blend lab experimentation with field testing.
  • Strong understanding of environmental qualification standards such as MIL-STD-810, MIL-STD-461, ISO 16750, or IEC 60068.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in marine, defense, automotive, aerospace, or mining vehicle design.
  • Familiarity with AC (120/240/480V) power distribution architectures
  • Background in embedded system and sensor integration
  • Experience with integration of navigation sensors and systems.
  • Familiarity with common networking and external communication methods (LOS/BLOS)
  • Experience with reliability analysis tools (FMEA, FTA, or reliability block diagrams).
  • Knowledge of electrical safety and certification standards, such as UL, CE, or ABS requirements.
  • Exposure to autonomous or remote system architectures.
Physical Requirements
  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Occasional standing and walking within the office.
  • Manual dexterity to operate a computer keyboard, mouse, and other office equipment.
  • Visual acuity to read screens, documents, and reports.
  • Occasional reaching, bending, or stooping to access file drawers, cabinets, or office supplies.
  • Lifting and carrying items up to 20 pounds occasionally (e.g., office supplies, packages).
