Decarbonization Manager information

What does a decarbonization manager do?

A Decarbonization Manager is responsible for developing and implementing strategies to reduce an organization’s carbon emissions and overall environmental impact. This role typically involves assessing current energy usage, identifying opportunities for emissions reductions, and coordinating sustainability initiatives across departments. Decarbonization Managers often collaborate with internal teams and external partners to ensure compliance with regulatory standards and to achieve company sustainability goals. Their work is crucial in helping organizations transition to low-carbon operations and meet climate-related commitments.

What are the most common challenges faced by a decarbonization manager when implementing sustainability initiatives within an organization?

A Decarbonization Manager often encounters challenges such as aligning sustainability goals with business objectives, securing stakeholder buy-in, and navigating complex regulatory requirements. Coordinating efforts across various departments and managing data to accurately track emissions can also be demanding. Additionally, staying updated on evolving technologies and industry best practices is essential to ensure the success of decarbonization initiatives.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a decarbonization manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Decarbonization Manager, you need a solid background in environmental science, sustainability, or engineering, often supported by a relevant degree and experience in carbon management or energy systems. Familiarity with carbon accounting software, greenhouse gas (GHG) reporting tools, and certifications like LEED or ISO 14064 is typically required. Strong project management, communication, and stakeholder engagement skills set outstanding candidates apart. These competencies are essential for developing and implementing effective emissions reduction strategies and aligning organizational goals with evolving climate regulations.

What is the difference between Decarbonization Manager vs Sustainability Analyst?

Job description

A Snapshot of Your Day As a Specialist Professional (P4), this role is vital for providing expert technical support for gas turbine service operations, primarily focusing on customer sites in the western United States. To address this need, the position is structured around three core areas: on-site technical support during outages, in-depth component engineering and lifecycle analysis, and comprehensive stakeholder communication. This approach ensures both immediate field issue resolution and long-term component reliability, directly supporting regional service commitments and customer satisfaction. Given the focus on complex field diagnostics and design engineering, the ideal candidate will possess extensive experience in mechanical engineering, specifically with gas turbine compressors. The role requires a recognized subject matter expert with strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills to manage large projects and effectively interface with customers. How You'll Make an Impact
  • 50% On-Site Technical Support & Outage Management
    • Travel to customer sites across the western US to provide expert engineering support during planned and unplanned gas turbine outages. Lead on-site troubleshooting and root cause analysis for complex technical issues related to compressor casings, rotors, and associated components.
    • Perform detailed component inspections, assess operational damage, and provide authoritative recommendations for repair, replacement, or upgrades. Oversee the field implementation of technical solutions, design modifications, and engineering changes to ensure compliance with Siemens Energy standards.
  • 30% Component Engineering & Lifecycle Management
    • Apply advanced mechanical engineering principles to analyze the performance, stress, and durability of compressor components. Develop, design, and validate modifications and retrofits for existing gas turbine components to enhance reliability, performance, and service life.
    • Manage the technical lifecycle of assigned components, including conducting Design Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (DFMEA) and collaborating with manufacturing and repair teams. Create and maintain comprehensive engineering documentation, including technical reports, design specifications, and service bulletins.
  • 20% Stakeholder Communication & Project Coordination
    • Serve as the primary technical liaison for customers, providing clear, concise, and timely communication regarding component issues, project status, and resolution plans. Manage large-scale engineering projects with limited oversight, coordinating with internal departments such as sales, project management, and global engineering teams.
    • Prepare and present complex technical findings and project updates to internal management and external customers. Coach and mentor junior engineers, reviewing their work and delegating tasks on complex projects to develop team capabilities.
What You Bring
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related technical field.
  • Extensive experience (typically 8+ years) in gas turbine or rotating equipment engineering, with a specific focus on compressor components.
  • Proven experience as a subject matter expert in managing complex engineering projects and providing on-site technical support.
  • Technical Engineering & Design: Mechanical Engineering, Engineering Design Process, 3D Modeling, Tolerance Analysis, Design For Manufacturability, Advanced Knowledge with Large Gas Turbine compressor casing components and operation
  • Problem Solving & Analysis: Troubleshooting (Problem Solving), Analytical Skills, Investigation, Design Failure Mode And Effects Analysis
  • Project & Stakeholder Management: Influencing Skills, Product Lifecycle Management, Workflow Management, Presentation and writing skills are essential, Commercial knowledge of gas turbine contracts and project management are also a plus
