Job description

Kelly Pediatric Therapy is seeking a Teacher of the Deaf and Sign Language/Cued Language Services to provide services through a local Early Intervention Program serving infants and toddlers ages 0–3 in and around Wilmington, Delaware.

This position will begin part-time and offers the opportunity to build to a full caseload as desired.
**Travel is required between client locations**

Responsibilities
  • Provide direct and consultative services to deaf or hard-of-hearing infants and toddlers (ages 0–3) and their families, based on the child’s Individualized Family Service Plan (IFSP).
  • Assess communication and developmental needs, assist in developing intervention goals, and implement strategies that support language, communication, and overall development.
  • Provide family-centered coaching to empower caregivers to support language and communication development at home.
  • Deliver services in a variety of settings, including homes, community programs, and early childhood classrooms.
  • Collaborate with families, speech-language pathologists, audiologists, and other multidisciplinary team members.
  • Support children’s use of American Sign Language (ASL), spoken language, visual supports, hearing aids/cochlear implants, augmentative communication, and other assistive technologies as appropriate.
  • Document progress and participate in IFSP meetings and required reporting.
Required Qualifications
  • Must hold a valid Delaware Initial, Continuing, or Advanced Teaching License.
  • Must hold a Standard Certificate as a Teacher of Students Who Are Deaf or Hard of Hearing, per 14 Del.C. §1220.
Requirements to Earn the Standard Certificate
  • Bachelor’s degree or higher from a regionally accredited college or university.
  • Completion of an approved educator preparation program in Teacher of Students Who Are Deaf or Hard of Hearing, or evidence of a minimum of 30 semester hours of coursework specific to the education of students who are deaf or hard of hearing.
  • Successful completion of a student teaching program in the education of students who are deaf or hard of hearing, or one year of full-time experience teaching students who are deaf or hard of hearing.
Knowledge & Experience

Candidates should demonstrate knowledge/evidence in the following areas:

  • Auditory and communication development for children with hearing loss, including:
    • American Sign Language (ASL)
    • Oral/aural communication
    • Cued speech
  • Instructional techniques and assessment practices specific to students who are deaf or hard of hearing.
  • Language acquisition and communication modality development.
  • Assistive technologies and their application for students who are deaf or hard of hearing.
  • Any additional requirements specified in 14 Del.C. §1220 and applicable educator licensure regulations.
Preferred Qualifications for Early Intervention Staff
  • Experience or training in early intervention or birth–3 family support models.
  • Ability to provide services in natural environments, including homes, daycares, and community settings.
  • Strong collaboration and communication skills, particularly when working with families and multidisciplinary teams.
  • Sensitivity to cultural and linguistic diversity.
