Description
GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF POSITION
Electric Engineering Technician I
This is an entry-level technical engineering position in the Electric Engineering Division of the Electric Utility Department. It involves extensive multi-tasking for field work, design work, and customer service.
Electric Engineering Technician II
This is a technical engineering position in the Electric Engineering Division of the Electric Utility Department.
Electric Engineering Technician III
This is a highly skilled technical engineering position in the Electric Engineering Division of the Electric Utility Department.
Electric Engineering Technician IV
This is a highly skilled technical engineering position capable of working independently with minimal supervision in the Electric Engineering Division of the Electric Utility Department.
Examples of Duties
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Electric Engineering Technician I
  1. Process service orders for single-phase residential services and determine material and labor costs through OEU work-order system. Must be able to establish good working relationship with customers, contractors, and developers.
  2. Designs simple single-phase line extensions, both overhead and underground, and creates work orders to install transformers, lift poles, and services for new residential customers.
  3. Utilizes Geographic Information System (GIS) to add/modify/delete documentation of electric infrastructure facilities in conjunction with the OEU work order system.
  4. Utilizes AutoCAD to create and modify electric design drawings and supporting documentation for governmental agency permitting requests.
  5. Designs and creates work orders for security lighting and street lighting for City, commercial, and residential applications
  6. Responsible for obtaining easements, calculating customer project billing, designing county and state right-of-way permits, and tree trimming permits.
  7. Physically measures and stakes locations for poles, transformers, downguys, overhead conductors, and underground cables. Physically inspects customer-installed underground conduit systems.
  8. Attends staff meetings, pre-construction meetings, committee meetings, training classes, and site plan meetings.
  9. Other duties or projects as assigned.
  10. Performs calculations, design reviews & inspections, and customer requests for Renewable Generation Systems (RGS) such as customer-installed solar systems.

Perform any other related duties as required or assigned.
Electric Engineering Technician II
  1. Performs all job duties of a Level I Technician.
  2. Designs overhead and underground electrical distribution facilities for single and three-phase residential or commercial customers. Prepares construction drawings, cost estimates and work orders by using the computerized work order system. Determines single or three phase commercial customers' electrical requirements by utilizing load data and site plans supplied by the customer.
  3. Utilizes GIS, work order system, AutoCad, databases and spreadsheets for calculations and the creation of work orders.
  4. Designs lighting systems for residential and commercial customers using standard design guidelines.
  5. Designs simple fiber optic installations.
  6. Evaluates low voltage or voltage fluctuation complaints from residential and small commercial customers and upgrades systems as required by computing line and transformer size and system demand loads.
  7. Administers rules, regulations, policies and procedures of the Electric Utility.
  8. Makes field inspections on construction projects to assure compliance with plans and specifications. Prepare plans, cost estimates, and work orders for maintenance, repair, and relocation projects on the distribution system. Works with city, county, and state agencies, contractors, developers, architects, and the public.

  1. Performs all job duties of a Level II Technician.
  2. Designs complex overhead and underground electrical distribution facilities for residential and commercial developments. Prepares construction drawings, cost estimates and work orders by using the computerized work order system. Determines electrical load requirements for residential and commercial developments by using load sheets and utility standard load estimating techniques.
  3. Utilizes GIS, work order system, AutoCAD, databases and spreadsheets for calculations and the creation of work orders.
  4. Designs electrical lighting systems for developments and roadways using standard guidelines.
  5. Prepare plans, cost estimates, and work orders for large-scale, highly complex maintenance, repair, and relocation projects on the transmission and distribution system.
  6. Designs large, complex fiber optic installations.
  7. Evaluates complicated low voltage or voltage fluctuation complaints from commercial customers and upgrades systems as required by computing line and transformer size and system demands.

Electric Engineering Technician IV
  1. Performs all the duties of a Level I, II or III Technician.
  2. Independently designs highly complex overhead and underground electrical distribution systems for residential, commercial and industrial projects. Prepares construction drawings, cost estimates and work orders by using the computerized work order system.
  3. Attends construction meetings and represents the utility to contractors and developers. Must be able to explain the utilities construction standards and requirements to developers and contractors.
  4. Independently calculates electrical load requirements for residential, commercial and industrial projects by using load sheets and utility standard load estimating techniques.
  5. Reviews and comments on site plan and plat submittals.
  6. Utilizes GIS, work order system, O-Calc, spreadsheets, databases and AutoCad for calculations and the creation of work orders. May develop spreadsheets and databases for calculations or tracking of work orders.
  7. Prepares FDOT permits, easements, agreements and other documents necessary for the execution of a construction project.
  8. Designs electrical lighting systems by applying engineering principles and standards.
  9. Prepare plans, cost estimates, and work orders for large-scale, highly complex maintenance, repair, and relocation projects on the transmission and distribution system. May have to perform and make decisions of this nature independently without day to day supervision.
  10. Independently designs large, complex fiber optic installations including transmission backbone fiber installations.
  11. Coordinates various construction, maintenance, and repair projects. May act as project manager or resident observer.
  12. Assists in the development of new and revised standards, specifications, material, rules and regulations.

Minimum Qualifications
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Electric Engineering Technician I
High school diploma or GED required. Specialized coursework or on-the-job training in a related skill area preferred. AutoCAD experience is preferred. Must demonstrate aptitude to quickly learn basic-to-intermediate AutoCAD skills within first 6 months. No prior experience required.
Electric Engineering Technician II
High school diploma or GED required. Minimum of 12 semester hours in engineering, physics, mathematics, or basic electricity required. Equivalent combination of education and experience may substitute for college coursework. Minimum of two (2) years of experience in the electric transmission and distribution industry. Completion of the Engineering Technician II training program, or equivalent, required.
Electric Engineering Technician III
High school diploma or GED required. Associate of Arts degree with coursework relevant to engineering required. Equivalent combination of education and experience may substitute for degree requirements. Minimum of three (3) years of experience in the electric transmission and distribution industry. Completion of the Engineering Technician III training program, or equivalent, required.
Electric Engineering Technician IV
High school diploma or GED required. Associate of Arts degree with coursework relevant to engineering required. Equivalent combination of education and experience may substitute for degree requirements. Minimum of five (5) years of experience in the electric transmission and distribution industry. Completion of the Engineering Technician IV training program, or equivalent, required.
REQUIRED LICENSES/CERTIFICATIONS
Electric Engineering Technician I - IV
Must possess and maintain a valid Florida Operators Driver's License with an acceptable driving record.
Electric Engineering Technician II
The Electric Engineering Technician II is required to complete the Career Track program through the Electric Engineering Technician IV level within four years of their hire date.
Electric Engineering Technician III
The Electric Engineering Technician III is required to complete the Career Track program through the Electric Engineering Technician IV level within three years of their hire date
