Broadcast Systems Engineer

Position Overview

We are seeking an experienced Broadcast Systems Engineer to join our IT Broadcast team. This role is responsible for designing, implementing, deploying, and maintaining broadcast infrastructure, audio/video systems, and streaming technologies that support our organization's communication and media distribution requirements. The successful candidate will work collaboratively with IT Audio Visual and Datacenter Operations teams to ensure reliable, high-quality broadcast operations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design and implement broadcast infrastructure solutions including video distribution, streaming platforms, and live event production systems

  • Install, configure, and maintain broadcast hardware including cameras, mixers, encoders, decoders, routers, and distribution systems

  • Troubleshoot complex audio/video signal flow issues across broadcast systems and coordinate with IT teams on interconnected solutions

  • Manage live event broadcast operations, ensuring technical quality, reliability, and uptime during critical broadcasts

  • Develop and maintain comprehensive documentation for broadcast systems architecture, configurations, runbooks, and disaster recovery procedures

  • Monitor broadcast system performance, conduct capacity planning, and optimize infrastructure efficiency

  • Conduct preventive maintenance, firmware updates, and system upgrades with minimal impact to operations

  • Provide technical support and training to broadcast operators, content creators, and end users

  • Evaluate emerging broadcast technologies and provide recommendations for system enhancements

  • Participate in incident response and post-incident reviews to improve system reliability and resilience

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Broadcast Engineering (or equivalent professional experience with relevant certifications)

  • 10+ years of professional experience in broadcast systems engineering

  • Expert knowledge of broadcast standards including SDI, HDMI, IP-based streaming (RTMP, HLS, SRT), and HD Radio technologies

  • Hands-on experience with professional broadcast equipment: video cameras, mixers, encoders, decoders, routers, and distribution amplifiers

  • Strong understanding of audio systems, video signal flow, and broadcast signal chain architecture, including both analog and digital equipment

  • Knowledge of network infrastructure as it relates to broadcast delivery (bandwidth requirements, latency, QoS, TCP/IP, Ethernet switching)

  • Proficiency with live streaming platforms and broadcast management software

  • Experience with broadcast automation and scheduling systems

  • Strong troubleshooting and diagnostic skills with ability to resolve complex technical issues

  • Experience with hardware platforms: LiveU, ROSS, Telestream

  • Excellent communication skills and ability to work collaboratively across technical teams

  • Ability to work under pressure during live broadcasts

Preferred Qualifications

  • Industry certifications: Certified Audio Visual Professional (CAVP), SBE certification, or equivalent broadcast engineering credential

  • Experience with Cisco video conferencing systems or enterprise video platforms

  • Knowledge of audio DSP configuration and system tuning

  • Experience with scripting and automation for broadcast system tasks

  • Involvement in broadcast system upgrades or large-scale infrastructure projects

  • Broadcast Equipment: Video cameras, mixers, routers, encoders/decoders, distribution amplifiers, monitoring equipment

  • Streaming Technologies: RTMP, HLS, DASH, SRT

  • Audio Systems: Microphones, mixers, audio processors, DSP configuration, audio routing and signal flow

  • Network Knowledge: TCP/IP, Ethernet, network switching, bandwidth management, QoS

  • Video Formats: SDI, HDMI, IP video, resolution standards

  • Operating Systems: Windows Server, Linux fundamentals, vendor-specific broadcast OS

  • Software & Tools: Broadcast control systems, media asset management, video editing, diagnostic tools, automation systems

Work Environment

This role requires flexibility to support live broadcast events, which may include extended hours, weekend work, and on-call availability during critical broadcasts. The position involves working in broadcast facilities, control rooms, server rooms, and on-site event locations. Travel may be required to support off-site broadcast operations.
