What Is a Database Developer?
A database developer works in an Information Technology (IT) department creating and maintaining databases. You monitor and troubleshoot databases and run debugging processes. Responsibilities can include offering support to other departments or clients, updating systems, advising management on tech solutions and security, and managing machine data. You use computers, cloud data, applications, and programs to improve processes and streamline coding strategies. You may also have duties like presenting information to clients or upper management, and proposing and enacting system updates.
What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Database Developer, and why are they important?
What are some common challenges faced by Database Developers when working on large-scale projects?
What are Database Developers?
What is the difference between Database Developer vs Database Administrator?
| Aspect | Database Developer | Database Administrator |
|---|---|---|
| Primary Role | Designs, develops, and maintains database systems and applications | Manages, maintains, and secures existing databases |
| Skills & Certifications | SQL, PL/SQL, database design, programming skills | Database management, backup/recovery, security, certifications like Oracle DBA or Microsoft SQL Server |
| Work Environment | Development teams, software projects, coding-focused | IT operations, system administration, troubleshooting |
| Goals | Create efficient database solutions | Ensure database availability, performance, and security |
While both roles work closely with databases, a Database Developer focuses on creating and optimizing database systems and applications, whereas a Database Administrator manages the ongoing operation, security, and maintenance of existing databases. Understanding these differences helps organizations assign the right responsibilities and professionals for their data needs.

About Jewelers Mutual
Jewelers Mutual Group has been protecting the jewelry industry for over 112 years, and we’re now pairing that deep domain expertise with a ground-up technology transformation. Our engineering team in Raleigh is building a serverless, event-driven platform on AWS, a modern data stack on Databricks, and an enterprise AI capability designed to change how insurance works. This is Silicon Valley energy inside a company that’s been earning trust since 1913.
What You’ll Do:
Leadership:
- Lead and mentor a team of database administrators, providing guidance, support, and professional development.
- Set annual goals for the Database Administration Team. Monitor progress of those goals throughout the year and provide performance reviews for your team.
- Preparation and management of the Database Administration Team budget for employee and contractor headcount, training, cloud platform expenses and software tools.
- Lead the investigation of outages and perform after-action reviews to find root cause and prevent recurrence to maximize uptime.
- Define and document Database Administration Team standards and tools with an emphasis on full automation, observability and high availability.
- Collaborate with development, infrastructure and product teams to ensure seamless integration of applications and infrastructure.
- Champion operational excellence and continuous improvement across your team and the entire technology organization.
Design and Scale Cloud Platform Infrastructure:
- Lead the architecture, implementation, optimization and maintenance of all database platforms across multiple cloud platforms and environments.
Infrastructure as Code and Cloud Management:
- Ensure the database administrators leverage Infrastructure as Code (IaC) tools such as Terraform and Spacelift to ensure fully automated, repeatable and reliable processes that can easily scale across regions.
- Ensure database administrator’s Terraform code is secure and free from vulnerabilities using tools such as GitHub Advanced Security, Sonar Cube, etc.
- Act as a mentor, sharing best practices in automated database management and observability to cultivate an “automate everything” culture across teams.
Observability and Monitoring:
- Manage the development and implementation of observability frameworks providing real-time insights into system health and performance.
- Develops and maintains operational metrics that promote transparency and demonstrate continuous improvement.
- Lead the creation of actionable alerts and dashboards, empowering teams to monitor services effectively and respond proactively to issues.
Chaos Engineering and Disaster Recovery
- Design and execute failure scenarios, ensuring databases can handle unexpected events and recover with minimal downtime.
- Ensure the database administration team participates in annual disaster recovery tests to ensure critical systems can be recovered within the specified recovery time and recovery point objectives.
What We're Looking For:
- Bachelor’s degree in computer science, Engineering, or equivalent work experience.
- 3 years of experience in managing a database administration team or other relevant technology teams.
- 5+ years of Database Administration, Infrastructure or Data Architecture, IT Engineering, DevOps, or a related role with a focus on Cloud platforms.

- Hands-on experience with Infrastructure as Code (e.g., Terraform) for provisioning and managing cloud resources.
- Strong background in database observability tools for monitoring, alerting, and logging.
- Experience with serverless architecture and security practices.
Bonus Points For:
- Certifications in relevant technologies (Database, Data, Azure, AWS or Google Cloud Certifications, Windows or Linux Server Certifications, etc.) or equivalent work experience.
- Scaling large cloud application databases across regions.
- Knowledge of security testing, access control, and data protection in cloud environments.
- Experience with chaos engineering to test and improve system resilience and incident response.

A collaborative and supportive team culture where contributions matter, and continuous learning is encouraged.
Competitive compensation and benefits, including healthcare, 401(k) matching, and generous paid time off.
The opportunity to be part of a transformative team that will have a lasting impact on Jewelers Mutual’s success.
