What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Data Visualization Storytelling professional, and why are they important?

To thrive in Data Visualization Storytelling, you need a strong grasp of data analysis, visual design principles, and an understanding of narrative structure, often supported by a degree in data science, design, or a related field. Proficiency with visualization tools like Tableau, Power BI, or D3.js, as well as familiarity with data management systems, is commonly required. Creativity, critical thinking, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for translating complex information into compelling visual narratives. These skills are vital for conveying insights clearly, enabling informed decision-making, and engaging diverse audiences.

How does a Data Visualization Storytelling professional typically collaborate with other teams within an organization?

Data Visualization Storytelling professionals often work closely with data analysts, subject matter experts, and decision-makers to transform complex data into compelling visual narratives. They participate in cross-functional meetings to understand project goals and ensure that the visualizations align with business objectives. Collaboration with IT or data engineering teams is common to access reliable data sources, while feedback from stakeholders helps refine the story and presentation. Effective communication and teamwork are essential for delivering insights that drive informed decision-making.

What is data visualization storytelling?

Data visualization storytelling is the practice of using visual elements like charts, graphs, and infographics to convey data insights in a compelling narrative format. It goes beyond just presenting numbers by weaving together context, visuals, and narrative to help audiences understand complex data and make informed decisions. Effective data storytelling makes information accessible, memorable, and actionable for both technical and non-technical stakeholders.

AES helps enterprises, including Fortune 500 organizations, engage customers, empower employees, and transform operations through cloud, data, AI, and emerging technologies.

We’re seeking a Data Visualization Engineer (6+ years) who blends strong BI engineering skills with design intuition to deliver interactive dashboards, insight-driven visual narratives, and high-performance reporting solutions. You’ll translate business questions into clear, trusted visual experiences, connect BI tools to modern data platforms, and optimize semantic layers and models so stakeholders can confidently make data-driven decisions.

What you’ll do
  • Build interactive dashboards, reports, and visualizations that communicate KPIs, trends, and insights clearly.
  • Translate business questions into effective visual stories and measurable metrics.
  • Choose appropriate chart types, design patterns, and interaction models for different audiences and use cases.
  • Connect BI tools to enterprise data sources (cloud warehouses, relational databases, APIs, flat files).
  • Develop and optimize data models, semantic layers, calculated metrics, and reusable measures.
  • Apply best practices in layout, color, typography, accessibility (WCAG), and UX to improve usability and adoption.
  • Define and maintain visualization standards, templates, and style guides for consistent delivery.
  • Improve dashboard performance through query tuning, caching strategies, incremental refresh, and efficient modeling.
  • Partner with data engineering teams to validate data quality, reliability, and documentation.
  • Enable self-service analytics through training, documentation, and reusable dashboard templates.
  • Perform peer reviews and provide technical guidance within the BI development environment.
Required qualifications
  • 6+ years of experience in data visualization, BI engineering, or a related field.
  • Expert-level proficiency in Power BI, Tableau, Looker, or Qlik Sense.
  • Strong SQL skills for querying, optimizing, and troubleshooting large datasets.
  • Solid understanding of BI data modeling concepts: star/snowflake schemas, relationships, aggregations, and semantic modeling.
  • Experience integrating BI tools with modern data platforms such as Snowflake, Databricks, BigQuery, Azure Synapse, or Amazon Redshift.
  • Strong grounding in data visualization principles, UX practices, and accessibility standards (WCAG).
  • Proven ability to convert requirements into polished, production-ready dashboards and reports.
  • Ability to work independently, manage multiple deliverables, and communicate proactively (consulting/contractor mindset).
Nice to have
  • Proficiency across multiple BI platforms (e.g., both Power BI and Tableau).
  • Python or R experience for data preparation, automation, or analytics integration.
  • Exposure to data governance, cataloging, metadata management, and BI CoE standards.
  • Familiarity with Git and CI/CD practices for BI development and deployment.
  • Experience in regulated industries (finance, healthcare, retail, government).
  • Relevant BI and/or cloud certifications.
Mandatory skills (quick summary)
  • BI platforms: Power BI / Tableau / Looker / Qlik Sense (expert)
  • SQL and large-scale data querying/optimization
  • BI data modeling: star/snowflake, semantic layers, aggregations, calculated metrics
  • Connectivity: Snowflake / Databricks / BigQuery / Azure Synapse / Redshift
  • Visualization + UX: hierarchy, color, typography, accessibility (WCAG), interactivity
  • Performance optimization: query tuning, caching, incremental refresh, efficient modeling
  • Requirements translation + stakeholder communication
  • Standards/governance: templates, style guides, reusable components
  • Data quality collaboration with engineering teams
  • Independent delivery across multiple priorities
