Job description

Job Title: Pediatrics - Palliative Care (Instructor - Nurse Practitioner)
Division: Pediatrics

Job Purpose
To practice in an advanced role to provide developmentally and age-appropriate Palliative Care services to patients and families both inpatient and in the ambulatory setting at Texas Children's. The nurse practitioner (NP) will work under a delineation of clinical privileges and work collaboratively with other members of the interdisciplinary health care team. Practicing under established guidelines and clinical protocols, the NP assumes independent and interdependent responsibilities in the assessment, diagnosis and initiation of treatment and procedures to meet patient and family needs. As an advanced practice nurse, the NP is responsible for education, research, consultation and evaluation of clinical practice at various levels.
Job Duties
  • Provide age-appropriate care for one or more of the following age groups routinely: Neonate, Infant, Child, Adolescent, Adult.
  • Collect and evaluate health assessment data to provide appropriate palliative interventions.
  • Consistently demonstrate effective communication skills and work to eliminate communication barriers.
  • Participate in departmental quality, education and safety initiatives on an ongoing basis.
  • Consistently seek and apply new knowledge relevant to nursing to clinical practice.
  • Demonstrate current professional, managerial, and/or technical knowledge and skills.
  • Demonstrate NP role behaviors consistent with the development of advanced nursing practice.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Master of Science in Nursing
  • Advanced Practitioner Registered Nurse license from the Texas Board of Nursing. License may be Pediatric Nurse Practitioner (PNP), Acute Care Pediatric Nurse Practitioner (ACPNP), or Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP).
  • Specialty certification recognized by the Texas Board of Nursing. Specialty certification must match licensing specialty area. (For example, a Nurse Practitioner with an ACUTE CARE PEDIATRIC NURSE PRACTITIONER (ACPNP) license from the Texas Board of Nursing must also have an ACPNP certification.)
  • A minimum of three (1) year of RN experience providing care in a hospital, outpatient or hospice setting to chronic, complex patients or patients nearing end-of-life.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Pediatric or Family Nurse Practitioner with 3-5 years of experience as a nurse practitioner.
  • Strongly prefer palliative care experience with the ability and comfort of inpatient/outpatient patient care.
