Job Title: Recovery High School - Secondary Level Teacher 

Terms of Employment: 9-month contract; 183 days 

FLSA Status: Exempt

Reports To: Principal/Director

Brief Description of Position: 

Recovery high schools are small, relationship-driven environments. Teachers work closely with recovery staff and must be comfortable supporting students navigating early recovery, emotional regulation challenges, and academic re-engagement.

The Recovery High School Teacher is responsible for providing support to the instructional process in a youth-centered therapeutic educational setting, serving as a teacher with specific responsibility for supervising students within the classroom and other assigned areas. This position involves developing lesson plans and delivering group and individual student instruction within established curriculum guidelines for adolescents in recovery from substance use disorders. The teacher will collaborate with other teachers, clinical staff, and administrators to address instructional, behavioral, and recovery-related issues, helping youth find success in a program that integrates recovery and education. Our mission is to provide a safe, sober, and supportive education for these youth in their early recovery, where they can develop the skills and strengths needed for personal, academic, vocational and community success. 

Required Qualifications:  

• Bachelor's degree in teaching
• Valid Missouri Teacher Certificate
• At least two years of full-time classroom teaching experience
• Experience working with adolescents in alternative, therapeutic, or high-support settings
• Strong classroom management grounded in relationship-building
• Commitment to trauma-informed, student-centered practice
• Skills in human relations, leadership, and conflict management
• Knowledgeable of teaching techniques that meet the diverse needs of students
• Experience in formative assessments, cooperative learning techniques, and data analysis
• Excellent oral and written communication skills
• Demonstrate skills in computer word processing, spreadsheets, and databases

Preferred Qualifications: 

• Familiarity with the 12-step model of recovery and trauma-informed care
• Experience in recovery settings, behavioral health, or youth-serving programs.
• Training in Motivational Interviewing, restorative practices, or trauma-informed care.
• Familiarity with substance use recovery, harm reduction, and adolescent mental health.
• Experience with credit recovery, differentiated instruction, and/or Missouri graduation requirements.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: 

• Promote a culture of high expectations by creating a classroom environment that is safe, supportive, and appropriate to the maturity, interests, and abilities of students in recovery.
• Collaborate regularly with colleagues (academic and clinical) in order to improve instruction, employ common assessment, and support integrated learning.
• Promote a culture of high expectations, providing every student with high quality and culturally relevant instruction; create a safe, welcoming classroom environment that reflects and supports the full diversity of the student population and community.
• Guide the learning process toward the achievement of established curriculum goals while maintaining a therapeutic atmosphere.
• Communicate clear objectives to students for all lessons, units, and projects.
• Assess the progress of students on a regular basis, provide progress reports as required, and communicate with parents/guardians regularly regarding academic and behavioral progress.
• Employ a variety of instructional techniques and teaching strategies to meet the different needs and interests of students in small-group learning (class sizes of 15 or fewer).
• Seek the support of district specialists and clinical staff when concern arises regarding student progress or risk of relapse.
• Maintain an ongoing program of professional growth and development.
• Establish partnerships with the greater community and recovery networks as appropriate in support of the school's academic program.
