The Data Protection Manager leads the areas of Personal Data Protection for Murata Americas, ensuring that business operations are performed in compliance with privacy laws, regulations and internal company policies. This position minimizes risks and in support of our business’s abilities to meet its customer commitments and company objectives.

The Data Protection Manager has oversight of compliance with established data protection policies while also coordinating the company’s readiness to comply with emerging laws, and implementation of best practices. This role will be involved in the overall Information Security Management (ISM) activities as they are developed, with the objective that the Data Privacy (DP) and ISM areas will support Murata’s overall Information Risk Management Program, contributing to the continual strengthening of the security of Murata’s internal information.

What To Expect (Essential Job Responsibilities)
  • Develop, implement, and maintain protection of personal data and standards in support of company needs and in line with best practices.
  • Ensure organizational compliance with applicable regulations (e.g., GDPR, CCPA, etc., where applicable)
  • Lead the development, documentation, and implementation of data protection and privacy compliance processes and procedures.
  • Conduct privacy impact assessments and risk assessments to identify risks and potential gaps and advise leadership on emerging threats and privacy trends.
  • Develop and deliver data privacy awareness training, while promoting a culture of secure and purposeful handling of information.
  • Prepare regular reports, documentation, and presentations on activities, incidents, and compliance initiatives.
  • Coordinate and manage assigned projects to implement new or updated processes or initiatives.
  • Influence and collaborate with other teams to integrate data protection reqquirements as well as processes into IT systems, applications, and business operations.
  • Member of the Information Security and Data Privacy team, supporting the team's objectives to enhance all areas that relate to information security.
  • Lead investigation and response to data privacy security incidents and coordinate breach notification processes in accordance with legal obligations
  • Involvement with risk assessment exercises including internal surveys, assessments, audits, etc.
  • Help further develop, implement, and maintain company incident response plans.
Miscellaneous Job Responsibilities
  • Support the department and team’s objectives related to Murata subsidiaries and support their respective data protection needs.
  • Manage privacy rights requests, assist with data mapping activities, and support website cookie management configurations in collaboration with website development teams.
  • Communicate and attend meetings with colleagues in Japan or other locations which may be scheduled outside of typical working hours to accommodate time zones.
  • Provide direction and guidance to other internal departments or Murata subsidiaries as it relates to data privacy compliance and risk mitigation.
  • May help prepare training material or subject matter presentations as needed.
  • Communicate with all internal and external stakeholders to obtain current and applicable information.
  • Participate in cross functional teams or projects.
  • Additional tasks and responsibilities as needed.
What Is Required (Qualifications)
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration, Information Security, Cyber Security, Law, or a related field.
  • Relevant data protection or privacy certifications (e.g. CIPP, CIPM, ISACA).
  • 3+ years’ experience working directly within areas of data privacy and protection.
  • Experience planning, developing and maintaining a Personal Data Protection program, including related policies, guidelines, risk mitigation, and overall compliance efforts
  • Understanding risk management principles and practices as well as information security concepts and terminology. 
  • Familiarity with information security standards and frameworks (e.g., ISO/IEC 27001, NIST CSF, CIS) and compliance requirements such as GDPR, PIPEDA, CCPA, etc.
  • Previous experience conducting privacy and security assessments with the ability to operate and implement data protection best practices and regulatory requirements.
  • Experience leading or managing cross-departmental projects with project/program management skills.
  • Strong communication skills, written and verbal, with the ability to influence and engage stakeholders at all levels, and in the case of Murata subsidiaries, external to the company. 
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Excel.
  • Self-starter, results driven, and proactive attitude with the initiative and motivation to learn new skills.
  • Passionate about protecting information while remaining pragmatic.
How To Stand Out (Preferred Qualifications)
  • Experience working and communicating within a global company, Japan preferred.
  • Experience with an electronics company.
  • Experience monitoring and assessing impact of US Federal and State regulatory requirements related to privacy compliance and implementation of internal policies and programs to ensure company compliance.
  • Familiarity with Osano or similar data privacy platforms.
