Position Purpose:
Online Data Engineer teams at The Home Depot translate business requirements and build the infrastructure needed to capture customer data. They acquire datasets that align with business needs and develop algorithms to transform data into useful, actionable information. Additionally, they build, test, and maintain database pipeline architectures. They create new data validation methods and data analysis tools. Data Engineers develop application programming interfaces (APIs) to retrieve data. Our Data Engineers develop, host, and maintain in-house enterprise solutions to improve reliability and confidence through monitoring, continually testing, and validating the products we support. These associates use big-data techniques to cleanse, organize and transform data and to maintain, defend and update data structures and integrity on an automated basis.
The Online Data Engineer Manager position is responsible for managing a team and processes related to the development of advanced analytics to support the Company's strategic objectives. This position is responsible for prioritizing requests and managing a product roadmap. Additionally, the communicate effectively with technical and non-technical audiences. Online Data Engineer Managers provide data architecture that is flexible, scalable and consistent for cross-functional use and align to stakeholder business requirements.
Key Responsibilities:
  • 40% - People Management & Team Leadership - Provide leadership, mentorship and coaching to Data Engineers (individual contributors) and evaluate performance, execution, and contribution; Attract, retain and develop top talent to build an effective and high performing team; Support team in development of business knowledge and technical skills with clear plans and regular assessment of progress; Ensure appropriate processes and job-specific requirements are properly documented; Develop onboarding and training plan for both technical and soft skills that will ensure high level of capabilities within the team; Manage resources effectively to align with strategic initiatives and business needs; Foster collaboration with team members to develop a supportive and engaged team; Support team in the design and development of algorithms and models to use against large datasets to create business insights; Drive team's results and celebrate accomplishments.
  • 25% - Project Management & Team Support - Prioritize and assign projects by striking a balance between a variety of factors, like funding, return on investment, innovative or challenging work, among others; Manage programs for the team to ensure consistency of execution, balance of resources and quality solutions; Collaborate with program managers and business partners to align on objectives and expectations and ensure project teams deliver against them; Serve as escalation point for any issues or difficulties with specific projects; Provide executive updates to leaders at all levels of the organization on program effectiveness, team accomplishments, summary of findings and recommended solution, and explain internal and external impacts.
  • 15% - Strategy & Business Development - Leverage extensive business knowledge and relationships to seek out new business opportunities to leverage and advocate for team's skills; Effectively develop trust and collaboration with internal customers and cross-functional teams; Ensure alignment with IT support model, collaboration, tools and governance to enable the team to be most effective in executing their roles; Collaborate with other data team managers across the organization to establish high level strategy and optimize talent management.
  • 20% - Technical Exploration & Development - Guide and direct project teams in the requirements gathering, design, and development of complex applications/programs; Drive analytics teams to get matured in predictive and prescriptive analytics; Network with both academic and industry experts to further the application of advanced analytics to business problem.

Direct Manager/Direct Reports:
  • This position reports to the Senior Manager or Above
  • This position has 3-4 direct reports

Travel Requirements:
  • Typically requires overnight travel 5% to 20% of the time.

Physical Requirements:
  • Most of the time is spent sitting in a comfortable position and there is frequent opportunity to move about. On rare occasions, there may be a need to move or lift light articles.

Working Conditions:
  • Located in a comfortable indoor area. Any unpleasant conditions would be infrequent and not objectionable.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Must be 18 years of age or older.
  • Must be legally permitted to work in the United States.
  • Experience managing and growing team members in a professional setting
  • Demonstrated proficiency in guiding more junior team members through data modeling, mining, and data analysis

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Masters in a quantitative field (Analytics, Computer Science, Math, Physics, Statistics, etc.) or relevant work experience
  • Previous people or project team management experience
  • Mastery of writing SQL queries against a relational/column-based database
  • Proficient building ETL/data pipelines
  • Mastery of a modern scripting language (preferably Python)
  • Proficient stitching and maintaining data from multiple sources using tools like Google BigQuery and Python
  • *NOTE: Below qualifications may be team specific
  • Experience with JavaScript, Front-end development frameworks (React, Nucleus), and QA apps (Retina, KPI Shield, Alert Goose) [John's Team]
  • Ability to produce tags for site data [John's Team]
  • Experience engineer and automate data flows pipelines (using tools like PySpark, AirFlow, or DataProc)
  • Knowledge of optimizing pipeline run time and lowering the cost on slots/storage consumption

  • The knowledge, skills and abilities typically acquired through the completion of a bachelor's degree program or equivalent degree in a field of study related to the job.

Preferred Education:
  • The knowledge, skills and abilities typically acquired through the completion of a master's degree program or equivalent degree in a field of study related to the job.
