What is a data modeler?

Data Modelers are professionals who design, create, and manage data models that define the structure, organization, and relationships of data within databases or information systems. They work closely with business analysts, database administrators, and developers to ensure that data is organized efficiently and can be accessed and used effectively. Data Modelers use specialized tools and techniques to translate business requirements into conceptual, logical, and physical data models, supporting data consistency, integrity, and security across an organization's systems.

How much do data modelers make?

Data modelers typically earn a median annual salary between $80,000 and $120,000, depending on experience, location, and industry. Senior data modelers with specialized skills in database design and data warehousing can earn higher salaries, often exceeding $130,000 annually.

What are some typical challenges data modelers face when working on large-scale projects?

Data Modelers often encounter challenges such as integrating data from multiple, disparate sources and ensuring consistency across large and complex datasets. Aligning the data model with evolving business requirements while maintaining performance and scalability can also be demanding. Additionally, effective communication with stakeholders—like business analysts, database administrators, and software developers—is crucial to ensure the data model meets both technical and business needs.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a data modeler?

To thrive as a Data Modeler, you need a strong understanding of database design, data modeling concepts (such as ER diagrams and normalization), and proficiency in SQL, often supported by a degree in computer science or a related field. Experience with data modeling tools like ERwin, IBM InfoSphere Data Architect, or Microsoft Visio, as well as knowledge of database management systems (DBMS), is typically required. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help in translating business requirements into technical data structures. These skills and qualities are essential for building scalable, efficient, and accurate data systems that meet organizational needs.

What does a data modeler do?

As a data modeler, your responsibilities are to break down complex computer system data into a logical process that makes it easier to understand for data analysis and statistical purposes. Your duties as a data modeler include reducing data redundancy, checking for data errors, conceptualizing and designing efficient data models, overseeing data architecture growth, and fine-tuning data performance. These positions are usually independent, but you may sometimes need to work with other team members to address potential issues related to data. Data modelers need self-motivation, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills, and you should be quick to adapt.

Job description

Who we are:

Financeit is a point-of-sale financing provider serving some of the largest home improvement and retail organizations in Canada. Our platform helps businesses close more sales by offering customers affordable monthly payment options for their next big home improvement, vehicle or retail purchase.

We are small enough that you can make an impact within the company and large enough to make an impact in the market. Financeit is a company where collaboration, inclusivity, fairness, and respect aren’t just ideas that get talked about, but are part of who we are. If such a workplace intrigues you, we hope you’ll join us.

About the role:

Do you love working with multi-disciplinary teams and stakeholders across a wide range of functions to implement and solve data engineering challenges? Are you equally skilled at delivering simple solutions to complex problems and consistently delivering on time?

We are looking for a skilled and detail-oriented Data Engineer to join our growing data team. In this role, you will be responsible for building and maintaining the data pipelines, models, and infrastructure that deliver reliable, high-quality data to teams across the organization. You will work closely with business stakeholders to ensure our data warehouse is accurate, well-documented, and scalable as the business grows.

What you'll be doing:

  • Collaborate with high-visibility teams and their stakeholders to support critical data engineering initiatives
  • Build and maintain dbt models across staging, mart, and metrics layers in the data warehouse, supporting analytics, reporting, and BI tools used across the business
  • Work closely with cross-functional teams to define and enforce data quality standards, best practices, and data governance policies
  • Support data consumers by improving data discoverability, maintaining documentation, and helping teams understand how to find and use the data they need
  • Monitor data pipeline health, investigate data quality issues, assess their impact, and validate fixes in collaboration with business stakeholders
  • Develop and maintain data and automation scripts to streamline data testing processes and improve efficiency
  • Participate in data migration projects, ensuring data quality and integrity during the migration process
  • Stay up to date with industry trends, advancements in data quality tools, and emerging technologies related to data engineering
  • Contribute to process improvements, documentation, and knowledge sharing within the data team
  • Help foster a team culture rooted in passion, curiosity, and continuous improvement
  • Bring energy, positivity, a critical eye, unimpeachable integrity, a team-first attitude, and a desire to contribute to building something great, together

Who you are:

  • You have a solid understanding of data modeling principles - you can design staging, fact, and dimension tables that are clean, consistent, and easy for downstream consumers to use
  • Strong communication skills - you can explain technical data concepts clearly to non-technical stakeholders and collaborate effectively with business teams
  • Elite critical thinking and problem solving and impeccable judgment
  • Legitimately curious and passionate about finding the “right answer” with a detail-oriented mindset and a “healthy sense of paranoia” about quality
  • Highly organized, disciplined and driven, with the ability to manage competing priorities while meeting deadlines
  • A bias toward documentation and data quality - you treat well-documented, tested models as a baseline expectation, not an afterthought
  • The ability to follow and manage best practices and standards for data quality, scalability, reliability, and reusability
  • A good working knowledge of agile delivery techniques
  • Balanced sense of pride & humility with the ability to thrive in a collaborative environment and bring energy and enthusiasm to team culture

Requirements

  • University degree in Engineering, Math, or Computer Science
  • 2+ years of full-time and/or internship/PEY experience as a Data Engineer or Data Analyst
  • Strong hands-on SQL and ideally dbt experience - you are comfortable building and refactoring layered data models, writing macros, and working with incremental materializations
  • Python proficiency for pipeline development, data transformation, and scripting automation tasks
  • Experience with Apache Airflow - being comfortable building and debugging DAGs, managing task dependencies, and handling failures gracefully in a production environment would be highly valued
  • Familiarity with AWS services, particularly Redshift and Glue, and comfort working in a cloud data warehouse environment would be highly valued
  • Experience working in indirect (B2B2C) and/or consumer lending would be a strong asset
  • Capable of having fun while doing all of the above; we’re serious about this

Benefits

Winner of Canada’s Most Admired Corporate Cultures, twice. We offer more than just the basics, take advantage of:

  • An award-winning culture with a collaborative & inclusive team.
  • Competitive pay and performance-based bonus:
    • Annual Base Salary: $75,000 - $95,000
    • Annual Bonus: 20%
  • Committed to flexible work arrangements, offering hybrid workplace options.
  • Comprehensive medical, dental and vision coverage + Lifestyle Account.
  • RRSP Matching and Parental Leave Top UP Program.
  • In office massage, meditation & workout sessions.
  • Virtual events such as Lunch & Learns, company parties, fun team activities and charity initiatives.
  • Career learning and development programs.
