Data Analyst Programmers are professionals who combine skills in data analysis and programming to extract, interpret, and visualize data insights. They use programming languages such as Python, R, or SQL to clean, manipulate, and analyze large datasets. Their work helps organizations make data-driven decisions by transforming raw data into actionable information, creating reports, and developing automated solutions for data processing. Data Analyst Programmers often collaborate with other departments to identify business needs and design data models or dashboards that support organizational goals.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a data analyst programmer?

To thrive as a Data Analyst Programmer, you need strong analytical skills, proficiency in programming languages like SQL and Python, and a solid understanding of statistics and data modeling, often backed by a degree in computer science, statistics, or a related field. Familiarity with data visualization tools (e.g., Tableau, Power BI), database management systems, and version control platforms is typically required. Standout professionals also possess problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication skills for translating data insights to stakeholders. In these cohorts, data to be analyzed includes whole-genome genetic, RNA-Seq, epigenome, proteomic, and metabolomic data from blood and lung tissue, in bulk and in single cells. Methods include genetic association, differential expression, and integrative omics analysis, including application of machine learning, development of deep learning models, network, and systems pharmacology methods.

The work will be performed as part of an interdisciplinary team, consisting of geneticists and genetic epidemiologists, biostatisticians, computational biologists, and translational scientists and clinicians. Successful candidates will work closely with students, programmers, postdoctoral fellows, and faculty.

Principal duties and responsibilities: Develop and use new and existing computational pipelines for analysis of research data. Efficiently leverage local compute, public and private cloud. Oversee data processing, dissemination, and access to high-throughput sequencing data. Provide statistical and analytic support.

Preference will be given to candidates with a strong background and experience in genomic data analysis.

Qualified candidates should submit their resume, sample code (GitHub repository preferred), the names of two references, and a cover letter to Dr. Matthew Moll (matthew.moll@channing.harvard.edu).
