What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Data Lineage Analyst, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Data Lineage Analyst, you need strong analytical abilities, knowledge of data management principles, and experience with data mapping, usually backed by a degree in computer science, information systems, or a related field. Familiarity with data lineage tools like Collibra, Informatica, or IBM InfoSphere, and understanding of metadata management and SQL is crucial. Exceptional attention to detail, problem-solving skills, and effective communication help in collaborating with technical and business stakeholders. These skills ensure accurate tracking of data flow, compliance with regulations, and support for data-driven decision-making.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals working in Data Lineage roles, and how can they be addressed?

Professionals in Data Lineage roles often encounter challenges such as incomplete or inconsistent metadata, rapidly changing data environments, and difficulties in tracking data movement across complex systems. Addressing these issues typically involves collaborating closely with data engineers, architects, and business analysts to ensure accurate documentation and communication. Implementing automated data lineage tools and fostering a culture of data stewardship within the organization can also greatly improve visibility and reliability of data flows.

What is data lineage?

Data lineage refers to the process of tracking and visualizing the flow of data as it moves through an organization’s systems, from its origin to its final destination. It helps organizations understand where data comes from, how it is transformed, and where it is stored or consumed. Data lineage is crucial for ensuring data quality, compliance, and troubleshooting data-related issues. It also supports effective data governance by providing transparency and traceability for data assets.

Job description

Job Description
We currently have a career opportunity for a Senior Data / Governance Analyst to join our team located in Pittsburgh, PA
Data Governance & Sustainability team is seeking a Senior Data/Governance Analyst with strong expertise in data lineage, metadata management, and data quality controls. The ideal candidate will be a member of the Data Governance and Sustainability team and help manage programs (regulatory and non-regulatory) in maintenance to ensure KPIs and reconciliation metrics stay above threshold. The role will assist in translating complex data flows into authoritative, trusted data assets; implement and establish lineage and control frameworks across critical data domains; and partner with business, technology, and risk teams to uplift end-to-end data integrity.
Perficient is always looking for the best and brightest talent and we need you! We're a quickly-growing, global digital consulting leader, and we're transforming the world's largest enterprises and biggest brands. You'll work with the latest technologies, expand your skills, and become a part of our global community of talented, diverse, and knowledgeable colleagues.
Responsibilities
Data Lineage & Mapping
  • Build and maintain data models and Source-to-Target mappings; perform regular reconciliations to ensure lineage reflects the current state.
  • Identify and remediate lineage gaps, reconcile lineage with technical metadata, and validate lineage accuracy with SMEs and data owners.
  • Establish and maintain authoritative data sources and golden records; enforce data standards and reference data alignment.
  • Drive metadata quality KPIs (completeness, consistency, timeliness) and contribute to data catalog enrichment in Collibra.
  • Actively participate as a stakeholder in program assessment forums and contribute to improving sustainability metrics.
  • Partner with sustainability team members, data owners, stewards, ETL engineers, solution architects, and risk/control and compliance teams to deliver key governance artifacts.
  • Parse consumer requirements in CRISP documents and reconcile them with governance reconciliation reports; ensure critical reconciliation metrics and artifact checks meet and exceed established thresholds, targeting 100% completion.
  • Help manage backlog, prioritize use cases, and report progress to stakeholders.
  • Prepare high-quality documentation including standards, procedures, mappings, lineage diagrams, control narratives, and remediation plans.
  • Manage maintenance JIRAs for reconciliation breaks and follow through to remediation and resolution within due dates, preventing ticket aging.

Qualifications
  • 4+ years of experience in data governance, data quality, data lineage, or related data management roles within financial services or similarly regulated industries.
  • Hands-on experience with lineage and catalog tools such as ASG Rochade, IBM Manta, Solidatus, and Collibra (data modeling, catalog curation, workflows, ownership models).
  • Experience with JIRA DC / Kanban boards, including creation, maintenance, and backlog prioritization.
  • Strong practical knowledge of data lineage concepts.
  • Proven experience defining and implementing data quality dimensions and controls; creating scorecards and driving remediation efforts.
  • Solid understanding of control frameworks (SOX, RCSA) and technical controls embedded in data pipelines and reporting processes.
  • Proficiency in Source-to-Target mapping, ETL/ELT concepts, and documentation of transformation logic.
  • Advanced Excel skills (formulas, pivot tables, Power Query, data validation, error checks) for analysis and control evidence.
  • Familiarity with SQL and at least one scripting language (Python preferred) for data profiling and control automation.
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to articulate complex data topics to both technical and non-technical audiences; strong documentation discipline.
