How much do data librarian jobs pay per year?
What does a data librarian do?
A Data Librarian manages, organizes, and provides access to data resources, ensuring they are discoverable and well-documented for researchers, students, and institutions. They help with data curation, preservation, and compliance with data management policies. Additionally, they support users in finding, analyzing, and properly citing datasets. Their role often involves collaborating with researchers to improve data stewardship and promote open data practices.
What does a typical day look like for a data librarian, and what kind of teams do they usually work with?
A typical day for a Data Librarian involves curating and cataloging datasets, ensuring data integrity, documenting metadata, and assisting researchers or staff with data access and compliance. Data Librarians frequently collaborate with research teams, IT professionals, and data stewards to manage the life cycle of data assets, from creation and storage to long-term preservation. They may also provide training or guidance on data management best practices and support data sharing initiatives. This collaborative, multifaceted environment makes the role both dynamic and integral to supporting organizational or research goals.
What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a data librarian, and why are they important?
To thrive as a Data Librarian, you need expertise in information science, metadata standards, and data management, usually backed by a degree in library science, information management, or a related field. Familiarity with databases, digital repository software (such as DSpace or Archivematica), and data curation tools, as well as certifications like Certified Data Management Professional (CDMP), are highly advantageous. Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and effective communication are crucial soft skills, enabling efficient collaboration with research teams and stakeholders. These qualities ensure that valuable data assets are organized, discoverable, and preserved according to best practices.
