What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Data Leader, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Data Leader, you need expertise in data analytics, data management, and strategy, often backed by an advanced degree in a quantitative field and experience in data-centric roles. Familiarity with tools like SQL, Python, data visualization platforms (e.g., Tableau, Power BI), and cloud data systems is typically required. Strong leadership, communication, and stakeholder management skills help drive organizational alignment and data-driven decision-making. These competencies are crucial for shaping effective data strategies, ensuring data quality, and delivering business value through insights.

How do Data Leaders typically balance strategic oversight with hands-on involvement in data projects?

Data Leaders often face the challenge of balancing high-level strategy with direct involvement in data initiatives. While their primary responsibility is to set the vision for data governance, analytics, and architecture, they also need to stay engaged with teams to ensure alignment and remove obstacles. This often means participating in key project meetings, reviewing major deliverables, and facilitating communication between technical and business stakeholders. Effective Data Leaders delegate operational tasks but remain accessible for critical decision-making and mentorship, fostering both team autonomy and strategic coherence.

What is a Data Leader?

A Data Leader is a senior professional responsible for developing and implementing an organization’s data strategy, ensuring that data assets are effectively managed and leveraged to drive business value. They oversee data governance, data quality, analytics initiatives, and often manage teams of data scientists, engineers, and analysts. Data Leaders play a key role in shaping data-driven decision-making, aligning data projects with business objectives, and ensuring compliance with data regulations. Their work helps organizations unlock insights from data, improve operations, and gain a competitive advantage.

What is the difference between Data Leader vs Data Analyst?

AspectData Leader
ResponsibilitiesStrategic data management, setting data vision, leading data teams
Skills & CertificationsData strategy, leadership, advanced analytics, often with certifications like CDMP or DAMA
Work EnvironmentExecutive-level, cross-departmental collaboration, senior management
FocusHigh-level data governance, business impact, long-term data strategy

While a Data Leader focuses on strategic oversight, governance, and leading data initiatives at an organizational level, a Data Analyst primarily handles data analysis, reporting, and supporting decision-making through data insights. Both roles require strong analytical skills, but the Data Leader emphasizes leadership and strategy, whereas the Data Analyst concentrates on technical analysis and data interpretation.

Data Analyst
Our Delivery team is seeking a Data Analyst to own delivery intelligence across the software development organization. Reporting to the Head of Experience Design & Software Delivery, you will collect, integrate, and transform data from multiple source systems into actionable insights that drive delivery improvement, planning accuracy, and leadership decision-making. This is not a passive reporting role. You will work directly with delivery managers and leaders to define and tailor metrics per team, proactively surface risks, and continuously improve how we measure and communicate delivery health.
In this role you will...
Design, build, and maintain delivery intelligence dashboards that provide transparency to delivery leadership, engineering leads, and executive stakeholders.
Own software delivery metrics across sprint health, engineering effectiveness, capacity utilization, quality trends, and team productivity.
Establish and maintain a standard set of delivery health metrics across all product teams, ensuring consistent measurement and a shared baseline for improvement.
Translate raw data into actionable insights. Surface patterns, anomalies, and risks with clear recommendations.
Proactively flag delivery risks and emerging trends to leadership same-day rather than waiting for scheduled reporting cycles.
Key Role & Impact
Collect, integrate, and transform data from multiple source systems (Jira, ServiceNow, Bitbucket, CI/CD pipelines, incident management, and others as needed) into consolidated, reliable views.
Configure and maintain data pipelines and integrations to ensure automated, trustworthy data flows from source systems to reporting tools.
Work directly with engineering leads, product managers, and delivery managers to define meaningful, team-tailored metrics and KPIs.
Support delivery planning and retrospectives with data-driven analysis: sprint completion, velocity, unplanned work, rollover, capacity allocation, and change failure rates.
Analyze incident and quality trends, including correlations between deployment frequency, defect rates, and production incidents to inform engineering improvement.
Provide clear, timely communication of delivery health, risks, and trends to stakeholders and leadership.
Support SDLC governance and compliance reporting requirements, including Board-level audit deliverables.
You & Your Experience
3+ years of experience in data analytics, business intelligence, or a related role within a software delivery or engineering environment.
Proficiency with BI/visualization tools, particularly Power BI.
Experience building and configuring data pipelines and integrations (ETL/ELT workflows, API integrations, scheduled data pulls).
Working knowledge of SQL and at least one scripting language (Python, R, or similar) for data transformation and automation.
Hands-on experience with Atlassian tooling (Jira, Confluence, Bitbucket) with the ability to extract, model, and report on their data.
Strong communicator who can present findings to both technical and non-technical stakeholders independently.
Demonstrated ability to work autonomously and exercise independent judgment on approach and escalation.
Experience with software delivery metrics frameworks (DORA, SPACE, or similar) preferred.
Background in logistics, warehousing, or 24/7 operational environments is a plus.
Bachelor's degree in a related field preferred, or equivalent experience.
Compensation: - $70,000 to $100,000 + COLA and this position is also eligible for Cognizant's discretionary annual incentive program, based on performance and subject to the terms of Cognizant's applicable plans. Application will be accepted by 6/28/2026
Benefits: Cognizant offers the following benefits for this position, subject to applicable eligibility requirements:
• Medical/Dental/Vision/Life Insurance
• Paid holidays plus Paid Time Off
• 401(k) plan and contributions
• Long-term/Short-term Disability
