Data Intern information

What types of projects and tasks can a data intern typically expect to work on during their internship?

As a Data Intern, you can expect to be involved in a variety of hands-on projects such as cleaning and organizing datasets, assisting with data collection, and supporting the development of reports or dashboards. You may work closely with data analysts, data scientists, or business teams to help identify trends and uncover insights from raw data. This role often includes learning to use data analysis tools like Excel, Python, or SQL, and contributing to ongoing team projects while gaining exposure to real-world data challenges. Interns are usually given guidance and mentorship, making this a great opportunity to build foundational skills and understand how data-driven decisions are made in the organization.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a data intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Data Intern, you typically need foundational knowledge in data analysis, statistics, and programming languages such as Python or R, often supported by coursework in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with data visualization tools (like Tableau or Power BI), spreadsheet software, and SQL databases is commonly expected. Strong attention to detail, problem-solving ability, and effective communication skills help interns interpret data and present findings clearly. These skills are crucial for accurately analyzing data, supporting business decisions, and contributing meaningfully to projects in a collaborative environment.

Internships serve as a stepping stone toward a full Data Analyst role, which requires more skills and experience.

Job description

Company Description

CAWST is a Canadian charity and licensed not-for-profit professional engineering consultancy teaching people how to bring safe drinking water, sanitation and hygiene in their homes, schools and clinics, using simple, affordable technologies.

At the heart of everything we do is our belief that when people have their basic water and sanitation needs met, they have the opportunity to succeed. Together with a global network of more than 2,100 clients and partners, we reached over 47 million people in 2025 alone — and our job isn't done yet.

Benefits of Working at CAWST

  • A meaningful role, making a difference every day for people living without basic water and sanitation.

  • A workplace culture where collaboration and innovation are fostered.

  • Rich on-the-job experiences and professional development opportunities.

  • Strong promotion of work-life balance and flexible work environment.

Job Description

Do you dream of your work making a difference in the world? CAWST is looking for an organized, curious, and passionate self-starter to join our Global Services team as a Learning & Development Intern.

This role will be connected to projects that support all of Global Services, with opportunities based on alignment between your skillset and the needs of our organization. The scope of work may include:

  • Learning administration — course set-up and support

  • Knowledge management — metadata, cataloguing, and organizing our resource library

  • Measurement — pulling and analyzing data from annual surveys, web analytics, and training evaluations

  • Research and creation of technical briefs and case studies

  • Development of learning assets and tools — online modules, presentations, lesson plans, activity guides, and more

Past interns have led independent projects and initiatives alongside their ongoing learning and Global Services work, and have connected with cross-functional teams including Fund Development, Marketing, and Digital Services.

  • Start Date: September 1, 2026

  • Compensation: Hourly, $24.50 per hour

Please note, to be considered for this role you must have Canadian work authorization that is valid for the full contract duration.

Qualifications

This position is open to all education levels and areas of study — we're focused on enthusiasm and fit with our team culture, not a specific degree.

We're looking for someone who is:

  • Passionate and committed to CAWST and our cause

  • A clear communicator with strong research skills

  • Creative and innovative, with an eye for graphic design

  • Self-motivated and a self-starter, comfortable taking initiative

  • Organized, accountable, and a strong team player

  • Ability to conduct self-directed learning is key to success.

  • French or Spanish fluency is an asset but not a requirement.

Additional Information

  • A cover letter that tells us more about you past what we can see on your resume, and why you are excited to work with CAWST. Applications missing this requirement will not be considered.

    • Please note: Your application will be read by real humans on our team, not a bot. We'd rather read a genuine note from you than a formal letter composed by AI (we can tell).

  • Your resume
