What is a data infrastructure manager?

Data Infrastructure Managers are professionals responsible for overseeing the design, implementation, and maintenance of an organization's data systems and architecture. They ensure that data storage, processing, and retrieval systems are efficient, secure, and scalable to meet business needs. Their role typically involves managing a team of data engineers, collaborating with IT and business units, and setting strategies for data governance and compliance. Data Infrastructure Managers play a critical role in enabling reliable data analytics and business intelligence by maintaining robust data pipelines and platforms.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a data infrastructure manager?

To thrive as a Data Infrastructure Manager, you need expertise in data architecture, storage solutions, and database administration, typically backed by a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with tools like SQL, Hadoop, cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud), and certifications such as AWS Certified Solutions Architect are highly valuable. Strong leadership, problem-solving, and communication skills help you effectively manage teams and collaborate with stakeholders. These skills and qualities ensure reliable, scalable data systems that support organizational goals and data-driven decision making.

What are some common challenges faced by data infrastructure managers, and how can they be addressed?

Data Infrastructure Managers often encounter challenges such as scaling systems to handle increasing data volumes, ensuring high availability, and integrating new technologies with legacy systems. Addressing these issues typically involves proactive capacity planning, implementing robust monitoring and alerting tools, and fostering cross-functional collaboration with data engineering and IT security teams. Staying up-to-date with industry best practices and investing in staff training can also help mitigate these challenges and ensure reliable, scalable infrastructure.

We empower employees to take on challenging assignments and roles with an elevated level of responsibility in our agile working environment. Our people make us who we are, and we create incredible products and experiences that empower us to THINK OUTSIDE.

Position Overview:
As the Server Infrastructure Manager, you will lead the team responsible for the strategy, engineering, and operations of Polaris' core server infrastructure environment, including on-premises compute, virtualization, storage, and Windows/Linux operating systems. In this role, you will help ensure the reliability, performance, security, and lifecycle management of foundational platforms that support enterprise and manufacturing systems. You will also guide the continued evolution of hybrid infrastructure capabilities, including selective expansion of Azure-based IaaS services over time. This is a compelling opportunity to lead a critical infrastructure function with broad impact across enterprise technology, manufacturing operations, and long-term platform modernization.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Define and execute the roadmap for core infrastructure platforms across on-premises compute, virtualization, enterprise storage, and Windows/Linux operating systems.
  • Lead, develop, and coach an infrastructure team by setting priorities, building technical depth, and ensuring execution across operational support and project delivery.
  • Ensure high availability, performance, stability, and security of infrastructure platforms supporting enterprise and manufacturing operations.
  • Lead lifecycle management, capacity planning, technology refresh initiatives, and infrastructure standards across data center environments.
  • Guide the evolution of hybrid infrastructure capabilities, including Azure IaaS services, while maintaining stability and scalability of core platforms.
  • Provide technical guidance during complex infrastructure issues and major incidents, supporting timely resolution and long-term remediation.
  • Drive operational discipline across monitoring, alerting, patching, maintenance, change management, root cause analysis, and service health reporting.
  • Partner with architecture, cybersecurity, application, and IT leadership teams to align infrastructure priorities, manage risk, and communicate platform performance.
  • Support vulnerability remediation, patch compliance, privileged access standards, audit readiness, backup, disaster recovery, and business continuity practices.
  • Drive standardization and automation across provisioning, patching, monitoring, and lifecycle activities to improve reliability and reduce manual effort.
  • Manage infrastructure budgets, forecasting, cost optimization, vendor relationships, contracts, and service performance expectations.

Desired Competencies:

  • Leadership: You inspire, guide, and empower others to achieve their best by setting clear direction, fostering trust, and creating an environment where people feel supported, motivated, and accountable for delivering results.
  • Problem Solving: You identify issues, assess root causes, and implement practical solutions that balance speed, quality, and risk.
  • Technical / Functional Expertise: You apply the required technical or professional knowledge to perform your role effectively and stay current within your area of expertise.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or related field.
  • 8+ years of experience in infrastructure engineering and operations.
  • 3+ years of experience managing infrastructure or server teams.
  • Proven experience operating and maintaining enterprise-scale, on-premises infrastructure environments.
  • Experience with data center operations, migrations, or consolidation efforts.
  • Working knowledge of hybrid infrastructure environments, including Azure IaaS services such as virtual machines, networking, and identity integration.
  • Knowledge of backup, disaster recovery, and business continuity strategies.
  • Working knowledge of ITIL or related service management practices, including incident, problem, and change management.
  • Experience managing team projects, including planning, prioritization, execution tracking, and delivery accountability.
  • Experience managing vendors, contracts, budgets, or technology refresh planning.
  • Preferred experience supporting manufacturing or OT environments, and relevant certifications such as VMware, Microsoft, or ITIL.
  • This position is not eligible for sponsorship.
