They help organizations establish, maintain, and improve processes that ensure high-quality, secure, and compliant data across the enterprise. Data Governance SMEs often collaborate with IT, compliance, and business units to define data standards, manage data-related risks, and support regulatory requirements. Their role is critical in enabling organizations to make informed decisions based on trustworthy data.

A Data Governance SME (Subject Matter Expert) regularly partners with teams such as IT, compliance, legal, and business units to develop and enforce data policies and standards. This collaborative approach ensures that data handling processes meet regulatory requirements and business objectives, fostering a culture of data stewardship across the organization.
