What is a Data Governance SME?

Data Governance Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) are professionals who possess deep expertise in data governance frameworks, policies, and best practices. They help organizations establish, maintain, and improve processes that ensure high-quality, secure, and compliant data across the enterprise. Data Governance SMEs often collaborate with IT, compliance, and business units to define data standards, manage data-related risks, and support regulatory requirements. Their role is critical in enabling organizations to make informed decisions based on trustworthy data.

How does a Data Governance SME typically collaborate with other departments to ensure compliance and data quality?

A Data Governance SME (Subject Matter Expert) regularly partners with teams such as IT, compliance, legal, and business units to develop and enforce data policies and standards. They facilitate workshops, provide training, and participate in cross-functional meetings to align data management practices and address data quality issues. This collaborative approach ensures that data handling processes meet regulatory requirements and business objectives, fostering a culture of data stewardship across the organization.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Data Governance SME, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Data Governance SME, you need deep knowledge of data management principles, regulatory compliance, and data quality frameworks, often supported by a degree in information management or related fields. Familiarity with data governance tools like Collibra, Informatica, or Alation, as well as certifications such as CDMP (Certified Data Management Professional), is highly valued. Strong analytical thinking, stakeholder communication, and change management skills help drive data governance initiatives across the organization. These competencies ensure data integrity, regulatory compliance, and effective data-driven decision-making.
