These skills ensure robust, efficient data infrastructure that supports accurate analytics and informed decision-making for the organization.

What is the difference between Data Architect vs Data Engineer?

AspectData ArchitectData Engineer
Required CredentialsBachelor's or Master’s in Computer Science, certifications like TOGAF or AWS Certified Data AnalyticsBachelor's in Computer Science, certifications like Google Cloud Professional Data Engineer or AWS Certified Data Analytics
Work EnvironmentDesigns data systems, collaborates with stakeholders, plans data infrastructureBuilds, maintains, and optimizes data pipelines and databases
Employer & Industry UsageUsed across industries for data strategy and architecture planningCommonly employed in data-driven companies for data processing and pipeline development

While both roles work closely with data systems, a Data Architect focuses on designing the overall data infrastructure and strategy, whereas a Data Engineer implements and maintains the data pipelines and systems based on that architecture.

What does a data architect actually do?

A data architect designs and manages the overall structure of an organization’s data systems, including databases, data warehouses, and data pipelines. They develop data models, establish data standards, and ensure data quality and security, often using tools like SQL, cloud platforms, and data modeling software. Their role is essential for enabling efficient data access and supporting analytics and business decision-making.

What are Data Architects?

Data Architects are IT professionals responsible for designing, creating, and managing an organization's data infrastructure. Job description

Overview

At Tactile Medical, we are evolving our data capabilities from report-driven analytics to a scalable, enterprise data platform built on Microsoft Fabric. The Data Architect will play a critical role in designing and governing the end-to-end data ecosystem, ensuring consistency, scalability, and long-term sustainability. This role is responsible for establishing enterprise data architecture standards, connecting disparate systems, and enabling a unified data foundation that supports reporting, self-service analytics, and future AI/ML capabilities. As a highly visible, strategic partner to IT leadership, the Data Architect will balance hands-on technical work with architectural governance and cross-functional collaboration while helping to mature data practices across the organization.

Accountabilities & Responsibilities:

Data Architecture & Platform Design

  • Define and maintain enterprise data architecture standards, frameworks, and reference models
  • Design end-to-end Microsoft Fabric solutions, including Lakehouse, Warehouse, semantic models, and reporting layers
  • Establish scalable data modeling standards, including dimensional (star schema) and semantic modeling practices
  • Define environment and workspace strategies (dev, test, prod) to support reliable and repeatable delivery

Solution Governance & Enablement

  • Review and guide data solution designs to ensure alignment with enterprise architecture standards
  • Partner with Data Platform Engineering to establish reusable patterns, pipelines, and platform capabilities
  • Evaluate tradeoffs between speed, scalability, and long-term maintainability, providing clear recommendations
  • Enable consistent use of shared datasets, metrics, and semantic models across the organization

Cross-System Data Strategy

  • Design and document data flows, lineage, and ownership across systems and platforms
  • Define canonical data models to ensure consistency across core systems such as Salesforce, NetSuite, and Brightree
  • Align data definitions across the organization to reduce duplication and improve data quality
  • Establish architectural guardrails that support governance, metadata management, and appropriate data access

Stakeholder Collaboration & Leadership

  • Partner with business and technical stakeholders to translate data needs into scalable architectural solutions
  • Communicate complex architectural concepts and tradeoffs to both technical and non-technical audiences
  • Mentor and educate team members on data architecture standards, best practices, and emerging capabilities
  • Serve as a strategic partner to IT leadership, helping shape the organization's long-term data strategy

Other:

  • Participate in key architecture and data strategy discussions across the organization
  • Contribute to continuous improvement of data platform capabilities and processes
  • Perform additional duties as assigned

Qualifications

Required:

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Data Analytics, Statistics, or a related field (or equivalent work experience)
  • 5+ years of experience in data architecture, data modeling, or enterprise data design
  • Experience designing and implementing data solutions using Microsoft Fabric or related technologies (e.g., Azure Data Factory, Lakehouse, OneLake, Power BI)
  • Strong experience building dimensional data models (e.g., star schema) and semantic layers
  • Experience translating technical data structures into business-friendly data models and insights

Preferred:

  • Experience working with Salesforce data models and integrating Salesforce data into enterprise platforms
  • Familiarity with NetSuite and/or Brightree data structures
  • Experience in healthcare, medical device, or other regulated environments
  • Background in mid-sized organizations or consulting environments with hands-on responsibilities

Knowledge & Skills

  • Strong systems thinking with the ability to design end-to-end data architectures across multiple platforms
  • Ability to define and maintain canonical data models across disparate systems
  • Proven ability to balance short-term delivery needs with long-term scalability and sustainability
  • Comfortable influencing decisions and driving alignment without formal authority
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to translate complex technical concepts into clear business language
  • Hands-on technical capability with a willingness to contribute to development when needed
  • Experience working in evolving environments where processes and standards are being established
  • Collaborative, adaptable, and pragmatic approach to problem-solving
