What does a cytogenetics technologist do?

A Cytogenetics Technologist analyzes chromosomes and DNA to detect genetic disorders, abnormalities, and diseases such as cancer. They prepare and examine biological samples using specialized laboratory techniques, including karyotyping, fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH), and molecular assays. Their work helps doctors diagnose genetic conditions and guide treatment decisions. Cytogenetics Technologists typically work in hospitals, research labs, or diagnostic laboratories.

What skills and qualifications are needed to be a cytogenetics technologist?

To thrive as a Cytogenetics Technologist, you need a solid background in biology, genetics, and laboratory techniques, typically supported by a bachelor's degree in a life science and relevant certification such as CG(ASCP). Expertise with laboratory information systems, fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH), and karyotyping equipment is essential.
