What are Cybersecurity Scenario Designers?

Cybersecurity Scenario Designers are professionals who create realistic simulations and scenarios to test and improve an organization's cybersecurity defenses. They develop exercises such as cyberattack simulations, tabletop exercises, and red team/blue team drills to help security teams prepare for real-world threats. Their work involves understanding potential cyber threats, designing scenarios that mimic these threats, and evaluating how well security teams respond. This role is crucial for identifying vulnerabilities and enhancing an organization’s ability to detect, respond to, and recover from cyber incidents.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Cybersecurity Scenario Designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Cybersecurity Scenario Designer, you need a strong understanding of cybersecurity principles, threat modeling, and incident response, often supported by a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with tools such as SIEM platforms, penetration testing suites, and cyber range environments, along with certifications like CISSP or CEH, is typically required. Creativity, attention to detail, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for crafting realistic scenarios and collaborating with cross-functional teams. These skills and qualifications ensure the development of relevant, challenging scenarios that prepare organizations to defend against evolving cyber threats.

What are some common challenges faced by Cybersecurity Scenario Designers when creating realistic training simulations?

Cybersecurity Scenario Designers often face the challenge of balancing realism with training objectives—scenarios must be complex enough to reflect evolving threats, but not so intricate that they overwhelm participants. Keeping scenarios up-to-date with the latest attack vectors and techniques requires continual research and collaboration with incident response teams. Additionally, designers must work closely with technical experts and trainers to ensure that scenarios are relevant to the organization's environment and that learning outcomes are measurable and actionable.

This role emphasizes cyber event design and cyber range operations, focusing on creating and executing realistic, operationally relevant training and evaluation events for Department of Defense (DoD) stakeholders. The ideal candidate will have extensive experience with network design, cyber range tools, and crafting scenarios that reflect real-world challenges.
This is a dynamic, on-site position requiring a strong balance of technical expertise and collaboration skills to align event designs with stakeholder objectives. Occasional travel may be required.
Key Responsibilities
Event Design and Planning
  • Lead the development of innovative and realistic cyber event scenarios tailored to DoD mission objectives, integrating complex networks, systems, and applications.
  • Define event objectives and translate user requirements into actionable tasks for the event team.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders to develop cyber terrain designs that replicate operational environments, incorporating real-world conditions and threats.
  • Utilize advanced cyber range tools to create scalable, virtualized environments for both training and evaluation purposes.
  • Identify and address gaps in existing event designs, continuously improving processes and outcomes.

Event Execution and Coordination
  • Manage the setup, configuration, and execution of cyber range events, ensuring all systems and infrastructure meet event requirements.
  • Oversee the integration of defensive and offensive cyber tools, TTPs, and emerging technologies into event scenarios.
  • Monitor network and system performance during events, resolving technical challenges in real time.
  • Facilitate collaboration between range users, sponsors, and technical teams to ensure successful event execution.
  • Conduct post-event analyses to capture lessons learned and provide actionable recommendations for future events.

Cyber Range Expertise
  • Operate and configure advanced cyber range tools, including deployment, monitoring, and traffic generation systems, to support complex event requirements.
  • Design and maintain realistic cyber terrains, including global gray and target environments, with a focus on network infrastructure, enterprise IT systems, and virtualization technologies.
  • Continuously evaluate and implement emerging technologies to enhance range capabilities and event realism.

Stakeholder Engagement
  • Communicate effectively with range users, sponsors, and leadership to gather requirements, align expectations, and deliver mission-critical results.
  • Present event designs, findings, and technical recommendations to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Author detailed event design documents and impactful technical briefings to support stakeholder decision-making.

Requirements
Required Qualifications
  • Education: Bachelor's degree in computer science, Information Systems, Engineering, Mathematics, or a related discipline with demonstrated expertise in network design and cybersecurity.
  • Experience:
    • 8+ years of experience with cyber range operations, cyber event design, or network engineering.
    • Advanced knowledge of Network design and architecture, including tactical and strategic networks; Virtualization technologies and enterprise IT systems (compute, network, storage); and Cybersecurity tools, techniques, and TTPs (both defensive and offensive).
    • Proven experience designing and executing realistic cyber event scenarios, leveraging advanced cyber range tools and methodologies.
    • Familiarity with synthesizing user requirements into actionable event objectives and designs.
  • Skills:
    • Strong technical writing skills for authoring event design documents and reports.
    • Superior oral communication skills, including the ability to present technical concepts to a variety of audiences.
    • Demonstrated ability to work both independently and collaboratively in high-pressure environments.
  • Clearance: Active Top-Secret clearance with SCI eligibility is required.

Desired Qualifications
  • Master's degree in computer science, Cybersecurity, or a related field.
  • 10+ years' experience designing and maintaining complex cyber terrains, including multi-domain operational environments.
  • Familiarity with cyber range tools, including deployment, monitoring, and traffic generation systems.
  • Extensive experience planning or conducting DoD Defensive Cyberspace Operations (DCO) or Offensive Cyberspace Operations (OCO).
  • Knowledge of emerging cybersecurity technologies and trends relevant to cyber range operations.
  • Relevant certifications such as CCNA, CCNP, CISSP, or CompTIA Security+.
