SMS Shipbreaking, LLC is one of the few approved ship recyclers in the nation and also handles the dismantling and recycling of oil drilling rigs and oil production platforms. An industry prioritizing recycling and environmental/workers' safety and handling all operations with integrity. SMS in Brownsville, TX is seeking a highly skilled and safety-focused Ship Cutter Supervisor.
A leading ship dismantler and recycler in Brownsville, TX is seeking an exceptional Ship Cutter Supervisor to join their team. Reporting to the General Manager, the Ship Cutter Supervisor will be responsible to direct, manage, coordinate and monitor daily activities of a team responsible for dismantling ships.
Responsibilities:
  • Responsibilities may include but are not limited to directing and monitoring the daily activities of a team who are responsible for cutting scrap metal materials into proscribed sizes using a handheld torch in a designated area within the ship.
  • Adherence to and strict compliance with SMS policies, and all applicable local, state and federal regulations.
  • Completion of all job-specific, employee-related SMS paperwork including toolbox talks, daily activity sheet, timesheets and all designated work permits.
  • Ensuring that the crew is working safely during all phases of performing the job duties required.
  • Knowledge of and adherence to safety requirements in a scrap yard environment, including use of proper PPE.
  • Ability to communicate with team to provide on-the-job training and assistance as needed.
  • Ability to work with other supervisors on projects in order to determine the working priorities.
  • Ability to establish and maintain good housekeeping practices to eliminate hazards to employees to the extent practicable.
  • Ability to lead a team towards optimal safety and productivity.
  • Ensuring proper cutting procedures are followed to prevent damage and personal injury
  • Ensuring proper safety regulations are followed and enforced in the designated area within the ship
  • Ensuring planned KPI's (Key Performance Indicators) of efficiency and performance are met or exceeded.
  • Ability to assess and distinguish between varying types of scrap metal material to determine appropriate cutting methods.
  • Knowledge of safe cutting and related torch burning activities, including proper PPE and cutting process and procedures.
  • Ensuring the gas and oxygen filters are in good safe condition.
  • Ensuring work area is free from wire, wood, asbestos, insulation and/or any other material.
  • Ability to communicate with team to provide on-the-job training and assistance as needed.
  • While the majority of this position is intended for the purpose of overseeing and directing the activities of a team, the ship cutter supervisor may be required to perform cutting work on occasion.
  • Coordinate nonferrous activities with Nonferrous Manager.
  • Work may require out of town travel for extended period of time.
  • Confirm personnel know and comply with company policies for example: Attendance Policy/Reporting, PTO requests, and Cell Phone Policy.
