How does a Customer Reliability Engineer typically interact with both clients and internal engineering teams?

Customer Reliability Engineers serve as a vital bridge between clients and internal technical teams. They regularly communicate with customers to understand their needs, troubleshoot issues, and provide technical guidance. Internally, they collaborate closely with product, support, and development teams to relay customer feedback, help prioritize reliability improvements, and ensure seamless incident resolution. This cross-functional role requires strong communication skills and the ability to translate technical information for different audiences, making every day varied and impactful.

What does a customer reliability engineer do?

A Customer Reliability Engineer (CRE) is responsible for ensuring the reliability, performance, and availability of a company's products or services for customers. They often work closely with development and support teams to troubleshoot issues, optimize systems, and implement solutions that improve customer experience, using tools like monitoring software and incident management processes.

What is the difference between Customer Reliability Engineer vs Site Reliability Engineer?

AspectCustomer Reliability EngineerSite Reliability Engineer
CredentialsTypically requires engineering degrees, certifications in cloud platforms (AWS, Azure), and knowledge of customer supportRequires engineering degrees, certifications in cloud and systems management, with a focus on infrastructure
Work EnvironmentCustomer-facing, involves direct interaction with clients to resolve issues and improve reliabilityPrimarily internal, focused on maintaining and improving system reliability and scalability
Employer & Industry UsageUsed by cloud service providers and tech companies with a customer support componentCommon in large tech companies managing large-scale infrastructure and services

The main difference is that Customer Reliability Engineers focus on ensuring customer satisfaction and resolving client-specific issues, while Site Reliability Engineers concentrate on internal system stability and scalability. Both roles require technical expertise and cloud knowledge but serve different operational needs.

How much does an SRE get paid?

SREs (Site Reliability Engineers) typically earn a median annual salary ranging from $100,000 to $150,000, depending on experience, location, and company size. Senior SREs with specialized skills in automation, cloud platforms, and monitoring tools can earn higher salaries, often exceeding $180,000 annually.

What is a Customer Reliability Engineer?

CREs act as a bridge between customers and engineering teams, helping to identify, troubleshoot, and resolve reliability issues. They often collaborate with multiple departments to implement best practices, monitor systems, and proactively address potential problems, ultimately aiming to improve the overall customer experience.

What engineers make $500,000 a year?

Senior engineers in specialized fields such as software engineering, data engineering, or cloud engineering can reach or exceed $500,000 annually, especially with bonuses, stock options, and extensive experience. High compensation often requires advanced skills, certifications, and leadership roles within large technology companies or consulting firms.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Customer Reliability Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Customer Reliability Engineer, you need a solid background in systems engineering, incident management, and troubleshooting, often supported by a degree in computer science or related field. Familiarity with cloud platforms (such as AWS or GCP), monitoring tools (like Datadog or Prometheus), and automation scripts is typically required. Exceptional communication, problem-solving abilities, and a customer-centric mindset are vital soft skills for this role. These skills ensure efficient incident resolution, strong client relationships, and reliable system performance under pressure.

Will AI replace SRE jobs?

AI can automate certain tasks within the Customer Reliability Engineer role, such as monitoring, incident response, and data analysis, but it is unlikely to fully replace SRE jobs. SREs focus on designing reliable systems, troubleshooting complex issues, and making strategic decisions that require human judgment. AI tools are intended to augment SREs' capabilities rather than eliminate the need for their expertise.

Job description

Company Overview
Amperesand is reinventing how the world powers its most critical systems.
We are facing a once-in-a-generation opportunity for infrastructure disruption. Electricity demand is skyrocketing, driven by AI factories, electric vehicles, and modern industrial growth. Energy supply is shifting to incorporate a more diverse mix of resources - including solar, gas, and batteries - at a massive scale.
And yet the power infrastructure behind our latest mega-projects hasn't meaningfully changed in nearly 100 years. Supply chains for today's infrastructure equipment can't match the pace and sophistication of critical energy projects. Amperesand is building hardware and software that rewrites this broken power infrastructure playbook to support a new era of energy abundance.
We've built a new class of intelligent, software-defined power infrastructure products leveraging a decade of advanced medium voltage Solid State Transformer research that's now ready for commercial deployment.
Our products and solutions go far beyond the capabilities of traditional electrical equipment. We make power systems that are faster to deploy, dramatically smaller and more efficient, and capable of supporting modern, dynamic energy needs for tomorrow's most demanding energy consumers.
Scalable in-house advanced manufacturing capability is our foundation for meeting timeline and quality expectation to serve infrastructure customers around the world.
Amperesand is led by breakthrough energy hardware development veterans and funded by top tier investors who share our vision of building a category-defining energy technology company.
With hubs in San Francisco, Reno, and Singapore, our global team is laser focused on building foundational technology to solve the most pressing problems in power infrastructure at scale.
Join us in building the power foundation of the future!
Role Summary
In this role, you will drive end-to-end reliability for our Solid-State Transformer (SST) platform, from concept to field deployment. You will lead cross-functional teams to mitigate program risks via Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (DFMEA)/Fault Tree analysis (FTA) and set clear reliability benchmarks for supplier selection. By developing advanced Physics-of-failure (PoF) modeling and performing expert-level RCA, you will ensure our hardware meets the demanding lifetime required for modern energy infrastructure.
Responsibilities:
  • Assist in the setup and execution of reliability test plans for SST's, including thermal mapping and accelerated life testing.
  • Utilize statistical methods to analyze test data, identifying trends in component or system-level failures.
  • Participate in DFMEA sessions, helping to document risks and track mitigation actions.
  • Perform initial root-cause analysis on failed components using lab equipment (microscopes, X-ray, etc.) and coordinate with senior engineers on complex investigations.
  • Assist in building reliability block diagrams and basic PoF models to predict product lifetime.
  • Work closely with the Design and Manufacturing teams to communicate test results and ensure reliability targets are met.
  • Maintain detailed records of test procedures, lab results, and reliability reports for key milestones.
  • Ability to travel occasionally to different facilities to support hardware deployment and testing.

Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or Reliability Engineering.
  • Strong understanding of power electronics fundamentals and circuit analysis.
  • Basic familiarity with reliability statistics (Weibull distribution, MTBF) and a desire to master advanced Bayesian and Monte Carlo methods.
  • Comfortable working in a high-voltage lab environment; experience with basic diagnostic tools (Oscilloscopes, Multimeters).
  • Interest in learning reliability tools such as ReliaSoft (Weibull++, ALTA) or simulation software like Ansys Sherlock.
  • Basic proficiency in Python, MATLAB, or R for data processing and automation.
  • Excellent written and verbal skills; ability to translate complex data into clear, actionable updates for the team.
  • A "first principles" thinker who is eager to learn and thrives in a fast-paced hardware startup environment.

Please note: This role requires working on-site 5 days a week. We do not offer hybrid or remote options.
