What is a customer reliability engineer?

A Customer Reliability Engineer (CRE) is a technical professional who works closely with customers to ensure the reliability, performance, and uptime of software products and services. CREs act as a bridge between customers and engineering teams, helping to identify, troubleshoot, and resolve reliability issues. They often collaborate with multiple departments to implement best practices, monitor systems, and proactively address potential problems, ultimately aiming to improve the overall customer experience.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as a customer reliability engineer?

To thrive as a Customer Reliability Engineer, you need a solid background in systems engineering, incident management, and troubleshooting, often supported by a degree in computer science or related field. Familiarity with cloud platforms (such as AWS or GCP), monitoring tools (like Datadog or Prometheus), and automation scripts is typically required. Exceptional communication, problem-solving abilities, and a customer-centric mindset are vital soft skills for this role. These skills ensure efficient incident resolution, strong client relationships, and reliable system performance under pressure.

How does a customer reliability engineer typically interact with clients and internal engineering teams?

Micron Technology is a world leader in innovating memory and storage solutions that accelerate the transformation of information into intelligence, inspiring the world to learn, communicate and advance faster than ever.

About our Team:

Micron's Front-End Central Quality Assurance (FECTQA) team plays a critical role in ensuring product quality and reliability within our fabrication facilities. We focus on proactive risk management, containment strategies, and process excellence to support manufacturing operations and deliver world-class semiconductor products. The team partners closely with manufacturing, engineering, and quality organizations globally to drive continuous improvement, share best-known methods, and ensure consistent quality standards across the network.

Position Overview:

As a Senior Engineer, FE Central QA, you will be instrumental in safeguarding product integrity and driving quality improvements across ID1/Fab4 operations. This role is responsible for product containment, risk assessment, disposition of deviated products, quality system compliance, and continuous improvement in a high-volume semiconductor manufacturing environment. You will also support new product qualifications and leverage AI-enabled tools and advanced analytics to improve quality assurance effectiveness, operational efficiency, and decision-making.

Responsibilities:
  • Complete product containment, risk assessment, and disposition processes to maintain product quality, reliability, and customer protection.
  • Develop, evaluate, and revise quality assurance methods and protocols.
  • Apply these methods to inspect and test in-process materials, production equipment, and finished products.
  • Ensure they meet company standards and applicable laws.
  • Collaborate with manufacturing, engineering, and quality teams to identify root causes, implement corrective actions, and drive continuous quality improvement initiatives.
  • Monitor, analyze, and report quality performance metrics, inspection data, defect trends, and process indicators to support operational and business objectives.
  • Ensure compliance with established manufacturing inspection, sampling, statistical process control (SPC), and quality management system requirements, including support for documentation, records management, and audits.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Quality Assurance, or a related technical field.
  • Experience in semiconductor manufacturing, fabrication operations, quality engineering, or a related manufacturing environment.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and risk assessment skills with experience supporting product disposition and quality issue resolution.
  • Experience working with quality systems, inspection methodologies, sampling plans, statistical process control (SPC), or compliance requirements.
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively across multiple organizations and communicate technical findings to diverse collaborators.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Advanced degree or equivalent experience, or professional certification in Quality Engineering, Reliability Engineering, or a related field.
  • Experience with new product qualification, failure analysis, statistical process control (SPC), defect reduction, and semiconductor reliability methodologies.
  • Knowledge of quality management systems and industry standards such as ISO, IATF, GMP, or comparable quality frameworks.
  • Experience partnering with quality engineers across multiple fabs to share best-known methods and drive global quality alignment.
  • Demonstrated effective use of AI-enabled productivity and engineering tools, including AI-assisted analysis, document generation, knowledge retrieval, and data-driven decision support.
Benefits:
  • We offer a choice of medical, dental and vision plans in all locations enabling team members to select the plans that best meet their family healthcare needs and budget.
  • Micron also provides benefit programs that help protect your income if you are unable to work due to illness or injury, and paid family leave.
  • Additionally, Micron benefits include a robust paid time-off program and paid holidays.

All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, age, national origin, citizenship status, disability, protected veteran status, gender identity or any other factor protected by applicable federal, state, or local laws.
