Job description

The Yard Operations Specialist provides administrative and operational support to the lumber yard by helping ensure deliveries are accurate, organized, and efficiently coordinated. This position performs load and truck inspections, prepares hardware orders for delivery, assists with dispatch functions as needed, and completes a variety of administrative tasks that support daily yard operations. The ideal candidate is organized, detail-oriented, and enjoys balancing office responsibilities with hands-on work in the yard while collaborating with drivers, yard personnel, sales staff, and customers.


 

  • Inspect outgoing loads for proper materials, quantities, securement, and documentation.
  • Perform load and truck checks to verify all deliveries are accurate, complete, and safely loaded before departure.
  • Identify and resolve discrepancies between customer orders and loaded materials before deliveries leave the yard.
  • Prepare hardware orders for delivery by pulling, organizing, staging, and verifying materials for customer deliveries.
  • Ensure hardware orders are complete, accurate, and matched to delivery tickets prior to loading.
  • Assist with dispatch responsibilities during vacations, absences, and high-volume periods.
  • Coordinate with drivers and dispatch to help ensure efficient scheduling and timely deliveries.
  • Prepare, review, and maintain delivery paperwork and related documentation.
  • Enter and update information accurately within company systems.
  • Answer incoming phone calls and assist customers, drivers, sales personnel, and internal departments in a professional manner.
  • Communicate effectively with sales, operations, warehouse, and yard personnel regarding delivery schedules, order status, and customer needs.
  • Assist with inventory-related tasks, reporting, and recordkeeping as assigned.
  • Maintain organized files and administrative records for yard operations.
  • Support the Yard Manager and Operations team with various administrative and operational projects.
  • Help maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment.
  • Follow all company safety policies and identify potential safety concerns.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Previous experience in lumber, building materials, warehouse operations, transportation, dispatch, logistics, or administrative support preferred.
  • Strong attention to detail with the ability to identify discrepancies quickly.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills.
  • Ability to prioritize multiple responsibilities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and basic computer applications.
  • Experience with dispatch, inventory, or transportation software is a plus.
  • Ability to work independently while contributing positively to a team environment.
