Job Description:

Position Overview:
Reporting to the Patient Care Manager, the Registered Practical Nurse (RPN) is a professional caregiver who is responsible and accountable for providing quality patient care within a total patient care delivery model in accordance with the standards of practice and competencies of the College of Nurses of Ontario, the Regulated Health Professionals Act and Scarborough Health Network (SHN). The RPN will be part of a busy department providing service across the spectrum of all emergencies including: a high patient population for paediatrics, cardiology, obstetrics/gynecology, moderate trauma, oncology, dialysis, medicine and psychiatry. The primary function of the RPN in the ED is to provide nursing care in the EDACA or the Emergency Department Ambulatory Care Area, RAZ and Major for patients with a Canadian Triage Acuity Score of 4 or 5 (least acute patients). You may be scheduled at the Centenary hospital based on departmental needs.
Requirements:

  • Registered Practical Nurse diploma
  • Current certification of competency from the College of Nurses of Ontario as a Registered Practical Nurse in good standing
  • Minimum of 1 year of recent Emergency experience
  • Current BCLS certificate
  • Completion of recognized Medication Administration Course
  • At least 2 years of acute med/surg experience as an RPN
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills both written and verbal
  • Demonstrates excellent problem-solving, decision making and critical thinking skills
  • Demonstrates excellent organizational and time-management skills
  • Demonstrates excellent team building skills
  • Demonstrates initiative and the ability to function both independently and as a multidisciplinary team member in a fast paced demanding environment
  • Demonstrated excellent interpersonal, communication and documentation skills
  • Demonstrated focus on internal/external customer service and partnerships
  • Demonstrates values consistent with SHN's Code of Conduct and is committed to fostering a healthy and positive work environment in accordance with Health & Safety policy and legislation
  • Utilize protective equipment provided and identify and reports hazards
  • Engages in ethical conduct and strives to understand and appreciate the diversity of our patient/staff population and community
  • Strong work ethic and commitment is required

Asset:

  • Experience in an Emergency Department setting is preferred
