Job description

POSITION TITLE: Volunteer

DEPARTMENT: Culture Camp


OPENING: July 2, 2026

CLOSING: August 15, 2026

Culture Camp 2026 Dates: August 17th -21st (Ages 10-17)


Summary:

The Culture Camp Volunteer supports the Yakutat Tlingit Tribe Culture Camp by assisting with daily program operations, cultural activities, logistics, and camper support. Volunteers help create a safe, respectful, and culturally grounded environment for youth, Elders, instructors, and staff.


Essential Functions:

  • Volunteers may assist with:
    • Supporting instructors during cultural activities and workshops
    • Assisting with material preparation and setup
    • Supporting cookhouse operations (meal service and cleanup)
    • Helping manage transitions between activities, meals, and sessions
    • Assisting with general camp setup and daily cleanup
    • Supporting stewardship practices and care for camp spaces
    • Observing camper safety and reporting concerns to staff
    • Assisting with check-in/check-out and general organization

    Volunteer Expectations

    All volunteers agree to:

      • Follow directions from Culture Camp leadership
      • Work collaboratively with staff, instructors, and other volunteers
      • Treat all participants, Elders, and staff with respect
      • Uphold Yakutat Tlingit Tribe values, including Haa Kusteeyi
      • Maintain appropriate boundaries with youth participants
      • Maintain confidentiality of participant information
      • Support a safe, substance-free environment

    Mandatory Background Check Requirement

    To ensure the safety of youth participants:

      • All volunteers working with or around youth must complete and pass a fingerprint-based background check prior to participation
      • Volunteers may not begin service until background check clearance has been received and approved by YTT
      • Volunteers agree to cooperate with all background screening requirements as determined by YTT and HR

    Youth Safety & Supervision

      • Volunteers may not be solely responsible for supervising youth at any time
      • Volunteers must always operate under the supervision of designated YTT staff
      • One-on-one isolated interactions with youth are not permitted
      • Volunteers must immediately report:
        • safety issues
        • injuries
        • behavioral concerns

    Cultural Respect & Knowledge Protection

    Volunteers agree to:

      • Respect cultural teachings, traditions, and protocols
      • Follow guidance from instructors and Elders
      • Respect that certain knowledge (At.oow) is:
        • inherited
        • protected
        • not for general sharing
      • Refrain from recording or sharing restricted knowledge without permission

    Work Environment/Physical Demands:

    The work requires some physical exertion, such as long periods of standing; walking over rough, uneven, or rocky surfaces; recurring bending, crouching, stooping, stretching, reaching, or similar activities; or recurring lifting of moderately heavy items. The work may require specific, but common, physical characteristics and abilities, such as above average agility and dexterity. The employee must be able to read, write, speak and hear.

    Supervisory and Management Responsibility:

    This position has no formally assigned supervisory responsibility or authority.

    Minimum Qualifications:

    • Must be 18 years of age or older.
    • Experience working with teens or youth in an educational, recreational, mentorship, or cultural program setting.
    • Must be able to pass a National Criminal and State background check.
    • This position has been designated as having regular contact or control over Indian children and will require an additional FBI criminal background check.
