What is a culinary school?

A culinary school is an educational institution that offers training and instruction in the culinary arts, including cooking, baking, and food preparation. Students learn essential techniques, kitchen safety, nutrition, and often gain hands-on experience in professional kitchens. Programs may range from basic certificate courses to associate or bachelor's degree programs, preparing graduates for careers as chefs, bakers, or other food service professionals.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a culinary school student, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Culinary School Student, you need a foundational understanding of cooking techniques, food safety, and kitchen operations, often supported by a high school diploma and a passion for the culinary arts. Familiarity with commercial kitchen equipment, food handling certifications, and recipe management systems is typically expected. Creativity, attention to detail, teamwork, and time management are crucial soft skills that help students excel in a fast-paced environment. These skills and qualifications are essential for mastering culinary fundamentals and succeeding in both academic and professional kitchens.

What are the typical challenges students face during culinary school, and how can they overcome them?

Culinary school students often face challenges such as managing a fast-paced learning environment, balancing theory with hands-on practice, and coping with constructive criticism. Time management is crucial, as students juggle multiple classes, lab sessions, and homework. Building resilience and staying open to feedback from instructors and peers can help students improve their skills. Collaborating with classmates and seeking mentorship from experienced chefs are effective ways to navigate these challenges and succeed in culinary school.

By combining culinary education with meaningful life lessons, our programs inspire a lifelong love of food, promote healthy eating habits, and celebrate the diverse culinary traditions that bring people together.
Position Description:
The Level 1 Enrichment Teacher collaborates with other Teachers to implement and manage culinary-based educational enrichment programs and cooking classes. This role is ideal for aspiring teachers, education majors, youth program leaders, camp counselors, coaches, and individuals who enjoy helping children learn through hands-on experiences.
This is not just an assistant role. Level 1 Teachers are active classroom leaders responsible for helping manage student engagement, classroom behavior, lesson execution, and overall classroom success. Successful teachers are dependable, adaptable, and comfortable taking initiative in a fast-paced environment.
You will play an important role in creating a positive, structured, and engaging learning environment where students can safely explore cooking, build confidence, and develop life skills.

  • Growth-oriented - you welcome feedback and actively improve

Responsibilities:

  • Distribute materials or handouts before class ends
  • Manage student behavior, engagement, and classroom flow
  • Teach and reinforce kitchen safety and basic cooking skills
  • Report in-class incidents promptly using incident reports
  • Submit feedback after each class

This Role May Not Be the Best Fit If:
  • You prefer highly structured work with constant supervision
  • You are uncomfortable leading or managing groups of children
  • You struggle with consistent attendance or communication
  • You are not interested in receiving feedback and growing as an educator

If you are dependable, proactive, and enjoy working with children in a fast-paced environment, we encourage you to apply.
Requirements
  • Experience working with children in a leadership, instructional, or support role
  • Ability to effectively manage and engage a group of students in an active, hands-on environment
  • Strong communication skills and a high level of reliability
  • Willingness to learn, receive feedback, and continuously improve
  • Must pass a background check and LiveScan
  • TB clearance required

Schedule Requirements:
  • Availability during after-school hours (typically between 2:00 PM-6:00 PM)
  • Class length varies from 2 hours to 6 hours a day, depending on location
  • Ability to commit to a consistent weekly schedule throughout the semester
  • We work with school and schedules change with seasonality
  • Ability to review lesson plans and training materials prior to classes

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to stand, walk, and actively engage with students throughout class sessions

Nice to Have (Not Required):
  • Experience working with children in a classroom, camp, enrichment, or youth program setting
  • Experience teaching, coaching, mentoring, or leading groups
