Title: Floater/Prep Cook

Job Summary:

Palmer’s Market is a fifth-generation, family-owned gourmet market and catering business, proudly serving our community with thoughtfully prepared food and exceptional ingredients. Our culinary operation extends beyond the Market and includes our commissary kitchen, Gourmet To Go production, catering and events, in addition to our wide range of prepared foods. Our teams work together across these areas to produce high-quality food while maintaining the standards our customers have come to expect from Palmer’s.


The Floater/Prep Cook is a flexible culinary team member who provides hands-on support across Palmer’s various kitchen and food production areas based on the needs of the business. This position is designed for someone who enjoys variety, works well in different environments, and is comfortable stepping into different kitchen functions and responsibilities throughout the week. Depending on the daily production needs, the Floater may support general food preparation, commissary production, Gourmet To Go, catering and event preparation, prepared foods, or other culinary operations.


The Kitchen Floater is expected to quickly learn and follow the procedures, recipes, food safety standards, and production expectations of each area. This role requires strong teamwork, adaptability, attention to detail, and a willingness to jump in wherever support is needed.

Key Responsibilities:


  • Flexible Kitchen Support: Work across Palmer’s culinary operations based on the needs of the business, supporting different kitchen areas, stations, and production functions on different days. Be prepared to shift priorities and step into areas where additional support is needed.
  • Food Preparation & Production: Perform a variety of preparation and production tasks, including cutting, portioning, measuring, cooking, assembling, packaging, and labeling products. Follow recipes, production lists, and established procedures to ensure consistency and quality.
  • Cross-Training & Adaptability: Learn the basic procedures, standards, and expectations of multiple kitchen areas; approach new tasks with a willingness to learn and adapt quickly.
  • Food Safety & Sanitation: Follow all food safety, sanitation, personal hygiene, temperature control, storage, labeling, and product rotation requirements. Maintain clean, organized, and safe work areas throughout the shift.
  • Quality & Consistency: Take pride in the quality, appearance, freshness, and consistency of the food being produced. Follow Palmer’s recipes and specifications and communicate any quality concerns or production issues to kitchen leadership.
  • Teamwork & Communication: Work collaboratively with chefs, leads, managers, and other team members across the culinary operation. Communicate clearly, ask questions when needed, and support the team as priorities and production needs change.
  • Organization & Efficiency: Keep workstations, ingredients, tools, and equipment organized and ready for use. Work with a sense of urgency while maintaining accuracy, quality, and proper food safety practices.
  • Inventory & Product Handling: Assist with receiving, stocking, organizing, storing, and rotating ingredients and supplies as needed. Help minimize waste by following proper storage, portioning, and FIFO procedures.
  • Catering & Special Production Support: Provide hands-on support for catering orders, events, special projects, and high-volume production periods when assigned. Assist with preparation, assembly, packaging, staging, and other production needs.
  • Clean-Up & Kitchen Maintenance: Maintain a clean and orderly kitchen throughout the shift and assist with opening, closing, cleaning, and general kitchen maintenance responsibilities.
  • Continuous Improvement: Look for opportunities to make the kitchen cleaner, safer, more organized, and more efficient. Be receptive to coaching and contribute ideas and solutions when challenges arise.
  • Other Duties: Perform other kitchen, culinary, and operational responsibilities as assigned based on the needs of the business.

Requirements:

  • Kitchen Experience: Previous experience in a professional kitchen, food production, restaurant, catering, or similar environment preferred; strong candidates with a willingness to learn will also be considered.
